Pierce leads IV past North Valley CAVE JUNCTION - Rachel Pierce threw a two-hit shutout Wednesday as Illinois Valley finished up its Skyline Conference schedule with an 8-0 victory over North Valley. Vanessa Box, Kim Hamilton, Rachel Pierce and Tiphanie Pope all had two hits for the Cougars, who return to the Class 3A state playoffs after a year's absence. Illinois Valley finished 15-6 - good for third place - in the conference and improved to 17-8 overall. "We got off to a great start sweeping Rogue River and that helped us all the way," Illinois Valley coach Gary Pope said. "And we won some important games when needed to. The Cougars, who collected 10 hits, led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth when they sent nine batters to the plate and tallied six runs on five hits, a walk and an error. Sydney Derda smacked a two-run single to center field, Pope lashed a two run-double to center field and Cathy Nadow tripled to left-center field. In the sixth, Melissa Day and Brittany Artoff drove in runs on ground outs. Christina Saldibar followed two seventh-inning walks with a two-run double as the Pirates (16-7, 13-8 Skyline) trimmed the deficit to one run. The Hornets (21-4, 18-3 Skyline) scored what proved to be the winning run in the second inning on Emily Mills' RBI single that scored Tara Houglum, who reached on an error. Ollie Herbert's two-run single highlighted a three-run fourth-inning for the Hornets. Trailing 3-0, Crater bunched three of its four hits together in a two-run fourth inning off winning pitcher Jessica Birt. Heather Quinn got the rally started with a one-out single. Diane Steele followed with a single and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Kelsey Anhorn's ground out scored Quinn, then Leann Foster delivered a RBI single. Henley (22-4) put together singles by Kristi Kinsman, Ollie Herbert and Jessie Miranda to score two runs in the first. Kinsman singled and eventually scored the winning run when Comet catcher Kelle Thomas dropped a throw on a force play at the plate with the bases loaded. W - Birt. L - Bittle. NORTH MEDFORD 1, ROSEBURG 0 - At Ashland, North Medford sophomore pitcher Keri Sevano made a first-inning run hold up in the non-conference state playoff tune-up game. The fourth-ranked Black Tornado (22-4) opens the playoffs Tuesday at Fagone Field against the winner of South Salem-West Linn. North scored the game's only run when Jill Carrigan opened with a double and Haley Varley produced a two-out RBI single. Corey Whitaker accounted for the only other Black Tornado hit. Roseburg's main scoring threat off Sevano came in the sixth when Erin Goodell singled, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on an error. Goodell was thrown out at home on a squeeze bunt by Shelly Black and Sevano got of the jam with an infield pop up. ROSEBURG 3, ASHLAND 2 - At Ashland, the Indians scored the game winning run in the top of the ninth inning for a win in a non-conference tune-up for the 4A state playoffs. After being sacrificed over to third base Molly Liston scored the winning run off a sacrifice fly from Shannon Burmeister. The Grizzlies (12-11) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning off a RBI single from Stacia Jones and a fielder's choice from Erica Corns. Ashland will play either Putnam or Clackamas in the playoffs on Tuesday.
