Today is the last day for Ward 2 residents to turn in applications and 25 verified signatures for the seat vacated by Sal Esquivel. Esquivel resigned in March after being chosen by Jackson County commissioners as interim state senator to replace Lenn Hannon. The four Ward 2 (Medford’s southwest quadrant) residents who have applied so far include Cathie Davis, former Medford deputy city manager; Shareen Fiol, transition specialist at Rogue Community College; Jim Kuntz, housing inspector for the Housing Authority of Jackson County; and Jeff Palmer, a 9-1-1 dispatcher and former news anchor for Channel 10. But City Recorder Beverly Sandblast said until 5 p.m. she would not declare those four as the only applicants because others have expressed interest. Advertisement "There’s about three more out there," said Sandblast. All applicants will be reviewed by a citizen committee on Monday, she said. The Ward 2 Citizens Committee is made up of Curt Burrill, of Burrill Real Estate; Dan Cunningham, of ACCESS Inc.; Esquivel; Matt Hart of the West Medford Community Coalition; Kathy Hathaway, an insurance agent; and Michael Travis, who serves on the city’s Housing and Community Development Commission. The committee will conduct interviews of the applicants beginning 6:30 p.m. Mondayin the Alba Room, City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St. The committee will make a recommendation to the council, which will interview applicants beginning 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, also in the Alba Room. The council is expected to make its appointment Thursday. The city is now accepting applications for another council vacancy in Ward 4. The seat was vacated last week with the resignation of Bill Moore, who has moved into a retirement center outside of his ward. Ward 4 is Medford’s southeast quadrant, south of East McAndrews Road, Spring Street and Oregon Street; and east of Willamette Avenue and Interstate 5. Applicants must complete an application, obtain 25 signatures from residents of Ward 4, and go through the interview process with a Ward 4 citizen committee and the City Council. The deadline is April 23. Ward 4 residents interested in serving on the citizen committee should contact the city recorder’s office. Both councilmen’s terms expire Dec. 31, as is the case for council members Jason Anderson and John Michaels, and Mayor Lindsay Berryman. None has officially announced re-election plans.
