PUBLIC SAFETY UPDATED: Man killed by falling tree while camping near Mount Ashland Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 11, 2014 at 10:43 AM Updated Dec 11, 2014 at 12:42 PM Posted Dec. 11, 2014 at 10:43 AM Updated Dec 11, 2014 at 12:42 PM » Social News A homeless man camping with his son near Mount Ashland died this morning after a tree fell on the tent he was sleeping in. Jackson County Sheriff's Lt. Marty Clark said crews from Ashland Fire-Rescue, the the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the sheriff's department arrived at a campsite on the Pacific Crest Trail about a mile from the Mt. Ashland Ski Lodge and found 40-year-old Phillip Crosby dead. His son, 18-year-old Alexander Crosby, had called 911 at about 5:30 a.m. after the tree fell because of high winds, Clark said. Alexander Crosby reported a tree 8 to 10 inches in diameter and about 20 feet tall had struck his father in the arm and chest. Phillip Crosby complained of difficulty breathing, then died of his injuries a short time later, Clark said in a news release. The Crosbys used to live in Sunny Valley but were en route to Arizona when the tree fell. Sheriff's officials said Alexander Crosby was taken to the Maslow Project, a Medford nonprofit that helps homeless youth, and that relatives who live out of state are coming to get him.
