Sarah "Sally" Haskell Crumm� Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 7, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Jul. 7, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Sarah "Sally" Churchill Haskell, 97, passed away June 30, 2016, in Ashland, Ore. She was born March 1, 1919, in the Yokohama Naval Hospital, Japan, the first of two children to Dr. Henry and Regina Farrell Haskell. The Great Tokyo Earthquake of September, 1923, devastated Yokohama and destroyed both their family home and Dr. Haskell's dental practice serving the foreign community. The family, however, were not injured and returned to Albany, New York where Sally's parents had originated. Sally and her sister, Eleanor "Peggy" grew up in Albany, attending Miss Quinn's School from kindergarten through grade 8. They attended Academy of the Holy Names in Albany and she graduated with a B.A. from College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York City in 1940. Sally received an M.A. in English Education from New York State Teachers College in Albany in 1942. She taught English and Drama in Albany for two years and enjoyed acting with the Albany Community Players before accepting a sales position with IBM in New York City, which lasted throughout the remaining war years. Sally served on the board of the Junior League and the Children's Theatre. Sally married Ralph Stanton Crumme, a United States Naval officer from San Francisco, February 1, 1947 in Albany. After moving to Berkeley, Calif. for two years Sally and Ralph returned to the New York City area including Manhattan, Hartsdale, and Scarsdale, where they lived for 18 years and had five children: Marian, Regina, Amy, Patty, and Henry. Sally was a very active community volunteer. She helped start a cooperative nursery school in White Plains and was a Girl Scout leader. A devoted Catholic, she participated in parish programs. With her husband, she enjoyed camping, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits. In 1966, the Crumme's moved to Atherton, Calif., and in 1972 retired to Ashland, Ore. In Ashland, Sally continued actively serving as a community and parish volunteer. She was a founding board member of Ashland-Talent Meals On Wheels and served as president for five years. Beginning in the 1970s, Sally was an original member and served for 10 years on the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon's steering committee to promote the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. During the 1970s and '80s, Sally sponsored and taught over 100 Life in the Spirit Seminars. At a time when many parish priests were unfamiliar with this religious movement, Sally dialogued extensively with them, presenting the new developments as a renewal of confirmation in the spirit of Vatican II. According to Deacon Francis Potts, a colleague from those days, "Sally was theologically and pastorally very sound, very balanced, and cautious. Her example as ambassador of the Holy Spirit reassured many priests." Sally is survived by daughters, Marian, Regina, and Amy; by son, Henry; grandchildren, Rachel, Melanie, Joel, Sarah, and Kez; and by great-grandchildren, Jakari and Kawaii. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph and daughter, Patrice.
