COLLEGE BASKETBALL Ducks have some work to do Comment By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 4:36 pm By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 4:36 pm » Social News EUGENE — Oregon’s hope of having a winning record at the midway mark of the Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball schedule was up in the air with Arizona State’s Bo Barnes’ last-second shot Friday. That wasn’t a comfortable feeling for the Ducks after they watched Shaquielle McKissic hit an off-balance three-pointer just a few minutes earlier to force overtime. Barnes got an open look on a long three but when it landed off the mark, the Ducks secured a 68-67 overtime win against the Sun Devils that put them at 5-4 in Pac-12 play heading into the second half of the schedule. “We were fortunate,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. Oregon sits in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Pac-12 and the top four teams in the conference get a bye in the first round of the conference tournament next month. Two of Oregon’s four conference losses were against sixth-ranked Arizona and a third was at Washington, which was looking like an NCAA Tournament contender at the time before center Robert Upshaw was dismissed. Washington has lost its first two games without him. The fourth loss was a 108-99 overtime defeat at Washington State. The unbalanced conference schedule had Oregon facing the Arizona schools twice in the first half of the season while the lone meetings with California, Stanford, Utah and Colorado come during the second half. Oregon is 4-1 at home in Pac-12 play heading into Wednesday’s visit from Washington. The Ducks face Washington State on Sunday, but then Oregon is on the road for five of its final seven conference games. “When the schedule switches now, we’ve got a few more road games so this was a really big win for us,” Altman said Friday. “We hoped to be a little bit further along than we are, but we have the second half of the conference season coming up and we are going to have to play better.” Oregon has had a revolving roster this season with seven newcomers among 10 scholarship players. Six-foot-10 junior Michael Chandler missed the first nine games and has been limited by a knee injury, and 6-10 freshman Roman Sorkin joined the team at the start of conference play. “I knew we were young, but we are coming along,” Oregon senior Joseph Young said. “It all starts with practice and then we’ve got Washington.” Freshman Jordan Bell has been starting for the past six weeks, and freshmen Dillon Brooks, Ahmaad Rorie and Casey Benson have all been regulars in the rotation. The freshmen have combined to average nearly 30 points and 18 rebounds per game. “They are doing a good job,” Altman said. “... We have been depending on them all year. Those five freshmen are going to play a lot for us, which makes it tough on the road, but you have to keep scratching.” Oregon picked up its first true road win of the season at Arizona State after dropping its first three conference road games. Oregon is 2-5 away from Matthew Knight Arena including a 77-70 win against Illinois in Chicago. Oregon (15-7) needs a strong stretch run to get in position for a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, but the few returning players can look back to last season for inspiration. The Ducks were 3-6 at the midway point of Pac-12 play and 14-6 overall but won eight straight games down the stretch to earn a second straight trip to March Madness. Oregon jumped from No. 75 to No. 63 in the RPI rankings after the win at Arizona State and it needs to move up considerably more to be considered for an at-large berth in the tournament. Oregon’s best win is against No. 67 UCLA, but it does have losses that won’t hurt it much, including two against Arizona — fourth in the RPI rankings — and one against No. 5 Virginia Commonwealth. In a down year for the conference, Oregon likely has two more chances to pick up a quality win when it hosts No. 11 Utah on Feb. 22 and visits No. 28 Stanford on March 1. Before that, Oregon will look to avenge losses at Washington and Washington State when those two schools arrive in Eugene this week. “I feel like we are doing alright, but we are not satisfied,” Young said. “We have a lot of work to do. I think we can do a lot better.” By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 4:36 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Super Bowl Fantasy Review and Highlights Feb. 2, 2015 at 10:00 am Top Fantasy Players, Projections for Patriots vs. Seahawks Jan. 31, 2015 at 8:39 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Titans Stars Jan. 30, 2015 at 10:37 am 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook for Buccaneers Stars Jan. 28, 2015 at 7:00 am DraftKings Fantasy Pro Bowl, Super Bowl Lineup Jan. 24, 2015 at 11:37 am Fantasy Favorites, Lineup Picks for Super Bowl XLIX Jan. 22, 2015 at 9:00 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
