Dramatic pin gives SOU wrestling win over Davis By RANDY HAMMERICKSEN ASHLAND -- Sophomore Ryan Green, grandson of former Southern Oregon wrestler Jerry Dilley, won a match for the ages Saturday night for the Raiders. Green, a sophomore from Lowell High School, scored a pin over Kief Kangaro at 6:35 of the final weight class (149 pounds) to give Southern Oregon a dramatic 21-13 victory over UC-Davis in a dual match at McNeal Pavilion. "This win will go down in SOU wrestling lore," Southern Oregon coach Mike Ritchey said. "I have a hunch people will be talking about this match for 10 years or more because the win was so dramatic." SOU led 15-13 entering the final match of the day, but Kangaro held a 6-2 lead entering the final three-minute period. Green cut the lead to 6-4, but time was running short. That's when he went for the fall -- and soon got it. A takedown by Green set the tone for a furious finish. "I knew I needed some big back points fast, or I needed a pin," said Green. "I was working hard to get it." Green admitted he couldn't help but hear Ritchey screaming "squeeze, squeeze" when he had his opponent on his back late in the closing seconds. "He heard me," said Ritchey. "He is now Mr. Green, as far as I'm concerned, instead of Ryan Green. I don't like calling a sophomore Mr. Green, but he deserves it." Southern Oregon seized a 12-6 lead with four straight wins by Ryan Schumann at 174 (4-2 over Martin Cook); by Dan Sturgell at 184 (4-3 over David Cobb); by Eagle Point's Brad Gray at 197 over Mike Maben (4-4 overtime criteria); and by Devin Cole at 285 (4-1 over Brandon Arenault). But UC-Davis bounced back with wins by Randy Katz at 125 over Nolan Harris, 14-5; and by Urijah Faber over Justin Thurman, 7-2, at 133. That set up the final two matches. Jeremy Wynia of SOU kept the Raiders in position for the team win with a 13-11 decision over Dallen Phillips of the Aggies, and Green finished off the dramatic dual with his pin of Kangaro. SOU improved its dual match record to 7-3. The Raiders can clinch their 30th straight winning season with one more victory. "The magic number is eight (wins)," said Ritchey. "We aren't there yet, but I'm thinking we might not lose again the way we're wrestling. "The kids are really coming along now and it's nice to see. It's a good time to be improving like this." Ritchey said he was particularly pleased with Sturgell's win over Cobb; and the dramatic overtime wins by Gray and Wynia. "Sturgell's win was huge," said Ritchey. "The other guy had only eight seconds to ride him." But Sturgell scored on an escape with two seconds left to win 4-3. As for Gray, Ritchey said, "To win over a Division I opponent on riding time was big for Gray. That's not easy to do." 157 -- Burt Pierson, UCD, dec.
