Sawyer takes seventh at district meet ROGUE RIVER - Leah Sawyer finished seventh for the St. Mary's cross country team at the District 5 championship meet on Thursday. With the seventh-place finish, Sawyer moves on to the state meet. The top seven individuals qualify. Sawyer crossed the line in 21 minutes, 46 seconds, despite running on an injured foot. Ben Tribelhorn took 12th for the Crusaders' boys with a time of 18:30.25, earning him second-team all-district honors. Canyonville Christian Academy took the girls team titles with Pacific finishing second. In boys, Pacific came out on top with Hosanna Christian taking second. The top two teams move on to the state meet. SOU Volleyball ASHLAND - The Southern Oregon University volleyball team used diversified offense and tight defense for a 30-14, 30-25, 30-26 Cascade Conference victory over Northwest College at McNeal Pavilion on Wednesday. Led by 21 kills from sophomore hitter Kristina Matchett, three Raiders finished in double digits for offense, helping Southern (14-6, 9-4) snap a two-match slide and halt an Eagle three-match win streak. "I thought we were exceptionally efficient offensively," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "We didn't block a lot, but our defense was excellent and we got the ball to our setter in a normal flow." The result was Matchett's 19th team-leading kill total, while senior all-star hitter Shelley Gorin broke out of a recent slump with 15 kills in 24 tries and 10 more from sophomore middle Lindsey Aitchison. As a team, SOU amassed 61 kills with only 12 miscues in 126 attempts, a .389 efficiency. Senior setter Sabrina Garboden tallied 56 assists to go along with nine digs, five kills and two aces. "Sabrina did a nice job distributing the ball, and she really helped get Shelley going," Elliott said. "When Shelley and Kristina are both playing well, we're an extremely tough team to stop." Northwest (7-10, 5-9), which aided SOU's efforts to secure a second-place league finish and a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament by toppling third-place Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls on Tuesday, received a 17-kill, six-dig effort by junior hitter Amanda Peterson. Southern also out-defensed Northwest 56-38 in digs, including a game-high 12 from Matchett, and improved to 6-1 at home this season. The Raiders return to action tonight with a key league showdown at fourth-place Western Baptist. Both teams along with OIT and Albertson are separated by one match in the league loss column. Bowling The Southern Oregon Merchants Masters bowling tourament kicks off today at Medford Lanes with a junior and adult Pro-Am tournament beginning at 5 p.m. The tournament runs through the weekend with a scratch tourament on Saturday, culminating in a double elimination match play event on Sunday.
