A speedy Black Tornado team spun its wheels for one half before settling down for a 5-0 win over Klamath Union at Hoffbuhr Field. "In the first half, we were doing too much running," North coach Dick Darcy said. "There is such a thing as being too conditioned. The girls had all that energy." Despite outhustling the Pelicans through 40 minutes, North Medford had only a 2-0 lead to show for it. Senior halfback Emily Gross started a productive day by converting a corner kick in the 15th minute of play. Fullback Nicole Bennett broke into the front line and added another goal in the 30th minute. Advertisement "The first half left a lot to be desired," Darcy said. "But after the half, we settled down a bit and the ball handling got a lot better." Gross led the Tornado out of the half with her second goal of the day. Twenty minutes later, Alex Batzer pushed the lead to 4-nil for North. With five minutes left in the game, Shauna Spano closed out scoring by putting a rebound back into the net. Senior keeper Caitlin Seeley earned the shutout for North. The first-team all-SOC selection blocked Klamath Union’s best shot at a goal midway through the second half when the Pelicans had a penalty kick. North outshot KU, 38-4. Darcy pointed to inspired play from senior midfielder Emily Hanson as a big difference in the game. "She was all over the place, setting up on offense and getting right back on defense," Darcy said. "She marked their star forward (Claire Edwards), and she didn’t even get off a shot on goal. She was our Energizer bunny today." ROSEBURG 2, ASHLAND 1 — At Ashland, Roseburg scored two unanswered goals to rally for the victory at Mountain Avenue Park. Michelle Davis tallied the winning goal for Roseburg at the 67th minute. After the teams played to a scoreless first half, Ashland grabbed a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half when Katie Coyger won a scramble in the box and converted from about 12 yards. The Indians knotted the score at 1-all on Carli Godard’s goal at the 55th minute. CRATER 3, GRANTS PASS 2 — At Grants Pass, Crater jumped out to an early lead then held off a Caver rally in the Southern Oregon Conference opener. Rachael Smith scored the game-winning goal for the Comets in the 78th minute off an assist from Katrina Ramirez. Grants Pass tied the game in the second half when Abby Klingel scored on a direct kick in the 53rd minute, and Megan Franko added another goal eight minutes later. Courtney Ratty gave Crater a 2-nil lead in the 26th minute off an assist from Smith, who initiated the Comets’ first goal when she drew a penalty in the Grants Pass box to set up an Andi Bagdan penalty kick. District 6 PHOENIX 5, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Rogue River, Phoenix junior Marci Klimek turned in a hat trick and freshman Megan Burr scored two goals in her varsity debut in the District 6 contest. Klimek scored two minutes into the season opener and added goals in the 39th minute and with 10 minutes to play. Burr scored an unassisted goal off a through pass from Klimek. Burr and her older sister, Ema, each had assists. The Pirates bombarded Rogue River with 18 shots. Chieftain goalkeeper Terra Prisbey had eight saves. ST. MARY’S 2, HENLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, St. Mary’s opened its season with a District 6 road win, outshooting Henley, 18-15, and getting goals from Erin Chamberlain and Katie Sinner. Chamberlain scored in the sixth minute when Maddie Murdoch assisted with a pass out of the corner. Sinner followed suit 18 minutes into the second half from the right side of the 18-yard box, assisted by Megan Frankel. ShaLane Wilson had nine saves for the Crusaders. NORTH VALLEY 2, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — North Valley had an 11-4 shooting advantage and took six corner kicks to none for host Cascade Christian at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. At the 40th minute, Kayla Wilhelm gathered a through pass from Shea Miller and scored on a breakaway to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. North Valley opened up scoring in the 20th minute when Becky Egli converted on a corner kick by Emily Chirnside. The Challengers cut the lead to one goal in the 56th minute as Whitney Winters found forward Sarah Brown, who chipped in a shot from 30 yards out. HIDDEN VALLEY 7, MAZAMA 0 — At Klamath Falls, Denise Powell turned in a hat trick to lead Hidden Valley past host Mazama in the District 6 opener. Powell helped break the game open with two second-half goals. Aleesha Zeppetello added two goals, while Kayla Flick and Melissa Henner also scored for the Mustangs.
