Butte Falls ends marshal's training BUTTE FALLS -- A special City Council meeting has been called for this evening to discuss disciplining town Marshal Jared Brown. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall. Although city recorder Lori Paxton would not discuss the specifics, she said the city withdrew Brown on Friday as a participant from the police training school in Monmouth. Had the city not removed him from the school, he would have been suspended, she said, noting that is the cause for the disciplinary discussion. The school is operated by the state Public Safety Standards and Training Board. However, no one at the school was available for comment late Tuesday afternoon. Brown, who was also unavailable for comment, is expected to speak publicly about the issue at today's meeting. Brown needs to be certified as a police officer by the academy in order to retain the marshal's position. A former reserve officer for the Phoenix Police Department who also served as a military policeman, Brown began serving as the Butte Falls marshal on New Year's Day 1998. He previously worked in security in Medford. When he was hired, he was the next-to-youngest police chief in the state. There is no difference between a town marshal and a police chief. Butte Falls, population 420, is the only town in Oregon with a marshal. Incorporated in 1911, the former timber company town has had a town marshal since its inception.
