A New Song ... SINCE YOU ASKED Hawks use I-5 as hunting ground Birds searching for ground squirrels I-5 is a popular feeding ground for hawks. Are they eating roadkill? — John, Medford Hawks do dine on animals killed by vehicles along I-5, said Harry Fuller, a member of the Klamath Bird Observatory board of directors. But they are primarily using the I-5 corridor to hunt ground squirrels, he said. Compared to plunging through tall weeds, it's easier for hawks to hunt rodents in the mown grass on the sides of the interstate and in-between the north and southbound lanes, Fuller said. Red-tailed hawks are especially drawn to I-5, he said. "Our freeways are just linear smorgasbords for red-tailed hawks," Fuller said. This time of year, hawks are more visible as they perch in trees that have lost their leaves. Hawks north of Seattle also migrate from colder climates down to Oregon, he said. So hawks are not only more visible in the late fall and winter, there are more of them here.
