Phoenix decks Panthers, 7-1 Phoenix capitalized on its opportunities and South Medford didn't in the prep baseball opener for both teams Tuesday at Miles Field. Phoenix bunched five of its seven hits into two innings as the Pirates scored a 7-1 non-conference win. South Medford was limited to four hits by five Phoenix pitchers, but drew seven walks and had one hit batter. In the process, South stranded 13 base runners. "It was a typical season opener, with the walks and all," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "There was a little bit of shoddy defense on both sides." After the teams played through three scoreless innings, the Pirates broke through with four runs in the fourth off the Panthers' second pitcher, Tony Conklin. Andy Bartels was hit by a pitch to open the rally, Travis Dunlap walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Dave Westfall stroked a two-run single, then Bobby Dawson and Kyle Kaufman delivered back-to-back doubles. South scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Chuck Shine reached base on an error, Matt Skundrick singled, Jon McCullom walked to load the bases and Brett Haag provided a two-out RBI single. Phoenix used two hits, a walk, a throwing error and a fielder's choice to score three more times in the fifth inning. "Our pitchers did a good job," said Hagler. "South had its opportunities, but we didn't give up the big hit." Theron Hull had two hits for Phoenix, while Westfall had two RBIs and scored twice. For South, Haag and Skundrick accounted for two hits each. EAGLE POINT 11, CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 6 -- At Phoenix, Ariz., Jesse Stevenson threw four innings of no-hit ball and the Eagle Point offense provided 11 runs and 11 hits during a rout of Christian Heritage of Oklahoma at the Greenway Baseball Festival. The Eagles broke open the game with seven runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter. Ryan Garrett led Eagle Point with three hits and Stevenson added two along with two runs scored. Teammate Charlie Jackson picked up two RBIs. Brad Quick went the distance in the opener, throwing only 60 pitches while giving up one hit. Ryan Bigelow and Peter Dusan had three hits apiece for the Lava Bears while Tony Stevenson picked up the lone hit for the Pelicans in the first game. In the second game, Bend benefitted on six Klamath Union errors to roll to the win. Ryan Ringer and Matt Schlam each homered for Bend while Dylan Woodrum, Jeff Mortenson and Jason Mortenson each had doubles for the Pelicans. Domiciliary. The Challengers opened things up in the first inning with six runs highlighted by a two-run single by Roberts and a two-run double by McCormick. Brian Edwards picked up the win, giving up two hits and striking out four in three innings of work. He also helped his own cause from the plate with two hits and two RBIs. MARY'S 1 , five innings -- Days Creek took advantage of five St. Mary's walks in the third inning to pull away in a non-conference victory. The Crusaders struggled offensively, mustering only three hits, while committing four errors and surrendering seven walks. Luke Tesdal knocked in the only run for St. Mary's in the second with a sacrifice, while Neal Governor and Brandon Frankel each added hits. Joey Sands led Days Creek with a 2-for-3 performance to go along with three runs scored.
