Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 10, 2005 Operation Backpack aids Gulf Coast students, teachers Students displaced by Hurricane Katrina will be heading to new schools in coming weeks, and Oregon education officials want to make sure they have basic supplies. Operation Backpack, an effort spearheaded by the Oregon Department of Education, is gathering school supplies for students and teachers along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast. The Oregon National Guard will collect donated school supplies and ship them to those in need. Supplies should be sorted for elementary and secondary students and packed in backpacks, bookbags, flat plastic tubs with lids or sealed plastic bags that Guard members can open and inspect. Soap and tube socks can be included, but packages shouldn’t contain food or money, organizers said. Classroom supplies such as textbooks, lesson plans with worksheets, maps, writing paper, art supplies and small dictionaries can be sent to teachers. Supplies can be dropped off at the National Guard Armory in Ashland, 1420 E. Main St., or in Medford, 1701 S. Pacific Highway. Jackson County Healthy Start, a program for first-time families, is collecting children’s books — from board books for infants to chapter books for teens — to send along with the school supplies. Book donations will be collected at the county health department office, 1005 E. Main, Building A, Medford. Call program manager Anne Daugherty at 774-8029 for details.
