Crater storms into finals of Jamboree ANTIOCH, Calif. � Crater tightened its rotation and in doing so tightened its grasp on more national notoriety Friday at the West Coast Jamboree. With the Comets� starting five posting most of the minutes, Crater broke open a back-and-forth contest with a 21-8 fourth-quarter surge in topping Redondo Union 66-52 for a berth in the tourney finals. Amy Denson proved unstoppable for Crater, scoring 31 points and giving Redondo fits with an all-around effort that included seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. "Denson played great," said Crater coach David Heard. "She did everything tonight. She got loose balls, got rebounds, passed the ball around. "They didn�t match up with her at all." Crater�s main success came via its remarkable 30-of-45 effort from the field, including 9-for-12 in the pivotal fourth quarter. "We executed pretty well," said Heard, whose team had a slight advantage in height. "We missed some easy shots we could have made that would have made it even better." Sarah Pool chipped in 15 points, four assists and three steals for Crater, while Janell Sapienza had 10 points, four assists and three steals. Ofa Tulikihihifo used her sturdy 5-10 frame to score 20 points for Redondo. Crater (9-1) will play Berkeley in today�s championship. Berkeley is ranked No. 12 in the USA Today national girls basketball poll. "We�ve got our work cut out for us," said Heard. SOUTH MEDFORD 71, SOUTH SALEM 63 � At Eugene, South Medford had everything click during a 21-9 spurt in the first quarter and kept South Salem at bay in the consolation bracket of the 12-team Farwest Shootout. All five Panther starters scored in the first quarter and Emily Perttu had a game-high 23 as South Medford (6-4) earned a spot in the fourth-place final today against Corvallis at 4:30 p.m. Perttu connected on 9 of 14 field goal attempts, many coming off the Panthers� fastbreak. Kellie Thomas scored in every quarter in one of her more consistent performances of the season, totaling 16 points on 7-of- 14 shooting. Whitney Grant also chipped in a strong all-around effort with eight points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Karla Zenz chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds as the Panthers withstood a second-half rally by South Salem. SILVERTON 54, NORTH MEDFORD 47 � At Lake Oswego, North Medford fell behind early and had no defense for Silverton senior post Serenity Ragone in a consolation game of the 16-team Lake Oswego Shootout. The Black Tornado (3-7) could never recover from a 17-9 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Ragone posted a game-high 24 points. Senior post Ashley Nelson led North with 13 points, while Kara Hwang added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Black Tornado sophomore post Kristen Mellbye grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team for the third straight game. Junior wing Brianna Gentry gave North a lift off the bench with some good defense and aggressive play on the offensive end. ASHLAND 46, ANDERSON (Calif.) 31 � At Redding, Calif., Ashland only turned the ball over four times, a season low, in winning the consolation championship of the Pepsi Slam Tournament. Ashland�s previous low for turnovers in a game was eight. Jackie Woods had 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead the Grizzlies (8-4). She and teammate Hanna Seltzer, who had six assists and four steals, were named to the all-tournament team. GRANTS PASS 57, YREKA 51 � At Murphy, Megan Moon and Denae Thomason combined for 16-of-26 shooting from the field for Grants Pass (7-4) in the Southern Oregon Holiday Classic. Grants Pass, which was filling in for Rogue River, plays Crook County in the consolation round today. The Cavers handily defeated Crook County earlier in the season. Grants Pass got its offense going in the third quarter and outscored the Miners 20-11 in the period after the game was tied at halftime. KLAMATH UNION 53, EUREKA 46 � At Klamath Falls, the Pelicans used the inside-outside combination of Megan Leppert and Sam Gilbert to slip past Eureka for the championship in the Klamath Basin Tournament. Leppert and Gilbert each scored 16 points for KU (8-2), which built a 15-point halftime lead before surviving a late rally by Eureka. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 47, SUTHERLIN 32 � At Oakland, Cascade Christian senior forward Kelly Clarke scored a game-high 19 points and was backed up by solid performances from sophomore point guard Hannah Gettman and senior wing Janelle Conley as the Challengers (8-2) advanced into the finals of the four-team Oakland Holiday Tournament Cascade Christian used a tight half-court man-to-man defense to take a 22-10 lead at the break. The Eagles (4-6) play Myrtle Point in today�s finals. Eagle Point led 26-24 at halftime, but took advantage of turnovers off its press to build a 13-point lead entering the final period. Sophomore post Alisa Lee scored 10 points and added nine rebounds, eight blocks and five steals for the Eagles. Hidden Valley junior wing Jennifer Bain notched a game-high 26 points.
