COLLEGE FOOTBALL UO's resilient receivers stay ready Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:42 pm By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:42 pm » Social News DALLAS — During Saturday’s Texas-sized College Football Playoff championship media day session at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, Oregon’s coaches and players weren’t in the mood to answer any questions about someone who isn’t on the trip. The Ducks don’t talk about football injuries and are uncomfortable discussing self-inflicted wounds. Darren Carrington, the talented 6-foot-1, 191-pound freshman wide receiver who had breakout performances in the Pac-12 Championship game and Rose Bowl, is suspended by the NCAA after a failed drug test. “It will not be a distraction,” coach Mark Helfrich said. “The only thing I’ll talk about from that standpoint is confirm that it’s an NCAA policy that is in play here, and he’s ineligible for this game, and we’ll ride.” Helfrich also confirmed that Ayele Forde, a senior running back, had been left behind in Eugene for a positive drug test. Carrington, who reportedly tested positive for marijuana, had been on a postseason roll with 126 yards and a touchdown against Arizona in the conference title game and 165 yards and two touchdowns against Florida State in the national semifinal. “Our whole thing now is we’re really excited about the guys that are going to show up (on Monday),” wide receivers coach Matt Lubick said. “We’ve had our best week of preparation of the season. I love where our mindset is. I’m excited about the guys that we’ve got out there.” Starting receivers Keanon Lowe, Dwayne Stanford and Byron Marshall believe they can pick up the slack in Oregon’s passing game during the national championship against Ohio State tonight at AT&T Stadium (5:30 p.m., ESPN). “These guys are resilient. We’ve got guys that can get it done,” offensive coordinator Scott Frost said. “We’ve got a team here that’s ready to play.” The Ducks (13-1) will also be without redshirt freshman receiver Devon Allen, who went down with a knee injury returning the opening kickoff of the Rose Bowl. Lubick said Bralon Addison, who hasn’t played this season because of a knee injury from the spring, isn’t going to be a homecoming hero in the title game. “He’s not going to play,” Lubick said of the speedy junior from Missouri City, Texas. “His rehab is going good, and we’re excited what he’ll do for us next year, but he’ still not ready to play.” Lowe, a senior from Portland, and Stanford, a redshirt sophomore from Cincinnati, are healthy and motivated to help Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota finish the dream season. “I think guys are just excited for the opportunity to play on this big stage,” Lowe said. “We’ve lost a lot of guys this year.” Carrington and Allen combined for 78 receptions, 1,388 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Tight end Pharaoh Brown added 25 receptions for 420 yards and six touchdowns before his season-ending injury Nov. 8. Marshall, the converted running back, leads the team with 66 receptions for 834 yards and five touchdowns. Stanford (578 yards, six touchdowns) and Lowe (359 yards, four touchdowns) have also missed games with injuries. “One of the reasons (Carrington) got an opportunity to get in there is because other guys got nicked up. Now we’re starting to get some of those guys that were nicked up previously healthy again,” Lubick said. “It’s been fun to coach this group, to see guys step up. It’s a tribute to our depth and the way we practice.” True freshman Charles Nelson will also have a major role against the Buckeyes (13-1). Former basketball player Johnathan Loyd, who is listed as Marshall’s backup on the latest depth chart, said he’s ready to contribute as a reserve receiver or as the punt returner. “Stay ready so you don’t gotta get ready. That’s kind of our standard, you know, next man up,” Loyd said. “We always make sure the fourth and the fifth and the sixth guy are ready and getting their reps at practice just the way the ones are getting their reps. We’ve all just got to get ready.” Carrington is facing a half-season suspension by the NCAA. The Ducks plan to welcome him back to the lineup at some point during his redshirt sophomore season. “It’s unfortunate,” Lubick said. “We believe he’s going to do what he has to do to get back on the right track.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 11, 2015 @ 4:42 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Vegas Odds, Top Fantasy Picks for Saturday Divisional Games Jan. 10, 2015 at 9:00 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Sunday Jan. 10, 2015 at 6:48 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Saturday Jan. 9, 2015 at 6:23 am Best FanDuel, DraftKings 2015 Divisional Lineup Advice Jan. 8, 2015 at 7:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Panthers vs. Seahawks Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Colts vs. Broncos Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
