LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Sept. 15 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Veterans, vote for Bates I'm sure Mr. Dotterer is a very nice man, but veterans, especially disabled veterans, would be well-advised to vote for Alan Bates. Having coffee with veterans is not helpful when they need social services that are much more likely to be supported by Senator Bates. Barbara Barnes, Medford Vote for Talbert I have worked with Kevin Talbert for a good number of years. We share interests in recycling, land stewardship, natural resources conservation and the campaign to support the OSU Extension Service. I have observed Kevin's leadership, his drive to improve Jackson County with current resources and his experience as a budget manager. I am impressed. Do your research on Kevin Talbert and his opponent for Commissioner Position 3. Compare their credentials, compare their endorsements and compare their positions on issues important to our county. Don't vote for a candidate who consistently voices a knee-jerk "no" just to satisfy a particular ideology. Vote for the independent thinker, Kevin Talbert. Catherine Kizer, Sam's Valley Annoyance misplaced I felt compelled to respond to the letter to the editor titled “Manor coverage annoying.” As a former employee of the Rogue Valley Manor for nearly 12 years, I have intimate knowledge about the group of people who have chosen to make their home on the hill. Some Holocaust survivors, some retired teachers, and others with lives and stories of honor that defied my imagination and touched my heart daily. Not only do the residents of the Rogue Valley Manor have my utmost respect purely for who they are and the values they represent, but also for the profound impact they have on this community. To name just a few avenues by which this is accomplished, the Foster Grandparent Program, the Fairy Godmother Program, Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) account for literally thousands of hours each year. All volunteer work is honorable and deserves respect, but I would be willing to go out on a limb and say that the passionate hours that countless Rogue Valley Manor Residents devote to volunteer work in the community would contend with nearly any other local group or organization. Brandi Joy Maurer, Medford Women still not safe Women of the world unite — get up and fight. Women are still not safe with their loved ones. Women are being knocked out and and even killed by the thousands in this country annually. Janay Rice is the new hot-button topic reminding us that we are still not protected by law enforcement and the courts. What can we do? Write the NFL, Roger Goodell, your Congressman, your local law enforcement. Let them know your solution, your disgust with the way women are treated. We can do something — we are half of the population, we do have a say, and we do count! Terri Rose, Central Point Manor residents give A recent letter from Carolyn Shaw blasted the Tribune for its coverage of a facelift at the Manor, saying it is of no interest to her how those millionaires spend their money. To answer a negative letter, this retirement community of about 1,000 elderly folks have mostly worked their whole lives to pay for their house, sold it, and used the proceeds to buy in to a continuing care retirement community (i.e., if one gets a terminal illness, they can stay put). I know no millionaires here. Mostly hard-working stiffs who make a choice in their golden years to share life in a well-run senior community. As for “Have they ever contributed to the good of the community,” Manor residents are starting their annual United Way drive this week to help raise the high school graduation rate to 100 percent by 2020, its anti-poverty program (CASH), to help solve transportation barriers for the disabled, elderly and low income, and 57 programs to help the community. Many of the residents here volunteer for boards, VITA (free tax preparation for the low income). Its "big sale" proceeds give scholarships and help the elderly who run out of funds here. So much for uncaring Manor residents.
