PREP SOFTBALL: North Medford splits at Invitational by Staff reports Tuesday, March 26th 2019 A A softball.jpg North Medford’s softball team found itself on the wrong side of a “game of inches,” according to head coach Chris Campbell, to start the North Medford Spring Break Invitational at U.S. Cellular Community Park on Monday. The Black Tornado didn’t let it get that close in its second outing of the day. South Salem rallied from an 11-5 deficit with a nine-run sixth inning to stun North Medford, 15-12, in Game 1 of the tournament, and the Black Tornado turned the tables in similar fashion to Barlow in its nightcap, scoring eight runs in the second inning to win going away, 17-5 in five innings. “We just had one bad inning (against South Salem),” said Campbell. “We were up 11-5 and then they got a three-run home run (by Delaney Keith) and just a couple booted balls and bounces that were just over outstretched hands, and that was that. It’s the game of softball, it’s always just that little couple inches away and the plays are a little different and your day is different.” North Medford (4-3) will return to action in the two-day event, featuring teams from throughout the state, at 2 p.m. today against Forest Grove and then again at 6 p.m. against West Albany. Grace Johnson went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs and Chelby Smalley was 3-for-5 with one RBI for the Tornado against South Salem (5-3), while Lauren Barry was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI and Kylie Baker added two RBIs. Keith was joined by teammates Bella Fleener and Makenna McCool in registering three hits for the Saxons, with Keith driving in five runs overall. Against Barlow, the Bruins opened a 2-0 lead through one inning but North Medford responded with an eight-run outburst in the second inning to take control. Barry had a two-run double and Allie Hertager added a two-run single to highlight the surge. Barry finished with four RBIs, while Kyleigh Lopez went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Smalley was 3-for4 with one RBI and Hertager 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Neveah Smith also scored three times, and winning pitcher Makenna Austin went 2-for-3 with one RBI. “It was just a different ball team in that second game,” said Campbell. “It was nice to see them play that kind of a game.” Barlow’s Emily Virell went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, three coming off a third-inning home run. HR — B: Virell. SOUTH MEDFORD SPLITS: Mazama had only four hits but seven South Medford errors paved the way for the Panthers to fall 15-6 in its first tournament game. South Medford added an 18-6, five-inning win over Brookings-Harbor in the nightcap. The Panthers (2-3) combined for 29 hits in their two games. Gabi Garcia, Matlyn Leetch and Maddalyn Fullenwider each had two hits and one RBI against Mazama, which saw Maddy Lease go 2-for-4. Against Brookings-Harbor, Leetch was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including an inside-the-park two-run home run in the third inning. Garcia and Lanie Rodriguez each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Naveah Atchley was 3-for-3 with one RBI and Cassie Fleming 2-for-4 with one RBI. CRATER SPLITS: At Clackamas, Crater’s Hannah Joseph tossed a two-hit shutout in a 10-0 six-inning victory by mercy rule against David Douglas before being upended by Oregon City, 12-5, in the Comets’ second game of the two-day North Clackamas/Rex Putnam Tournament. Joseph struck out 11 and walked just one. She received early support as the Comets (6-2) chalked up five runs in the first inning with the help of Jordan Peterson’s two-run single. Against Oregon City, a game that was slowed by rain stoppages, the Comets scored four runs in the opening frame before their offense went stagnant. CASCADE CHRISTIAN SPLITS: Cascade Christian used a one-hitter by sophomore pitcher Katelyn Willard and 12 hits to push past Amity in its tournament opener, 16-3 in five innings, but eight errors in Game 2 proved too much to overcome in a 12-11 setback against Taft. Willard’s lone hit allowed against Amity was a two-run first-inning double by Gabby Rolston, and she struck out seven with four walks and two earned runs allowed. Willard also had three hits, scored four times and drove in one for the Challengers (4-1). Audrey Quast contributed three hits and three runs and Rebecca Clark had three hits, three runs and three RBIs in the win over Amity (1-4). Against Taft, sophomore Ali Modrell and Willard each had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Willard struck out eight with six earned runs allowed.
