Former OSP forensics specialist found dead at coastal state park Monday Aug 28, 2017 at 1:09 PM Aug 28, 2017 at 1:09 PM A former Oregon State Police forensics specialist who had not been seen since visiting his brother in Dallas for the Aug. 22 solar eclipse was found dead Sunday in his car at Beverly Beach State Park near Newport. No foul play was suspected in the death of 71-year-old Steven Strauss, who was reported missing by his wife Aug. 23 amid concern over past medical conditions, according to OSP. No cause of death was immediately determined, but Strauss was known to be diabetic, Jackson County Sheriff Nathan Sickler said. The OSP on Sunday received a report of a non-responsive man in a vehicle at the park, the agency reported. Troopers called to the scene confirmed it was Strauss' vehicle and positively identified his body, police said. Strauss joined the OSP in 1972 and rose to the rank of lieutenant, retiring in 1999 as a forensic criminalist from the OSP Crime Lab in Central Point.
