Lois Emmerette (Wright) Huntley Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 26, 2015 at 8:47 PM Posted Mar. 26, 2015 at 8:47 PM » Social News November 7, 1921 March 19, 2015 Lois Huntley was welcomed into heaven on her daughter Carole's birthday as she passed peacefully in her sleep. She was 93. Lois Wright was born in Limestone, Montana in a small, one-room log cabin where she enjoyed a true pioneer childhood. During the Depression, the family decided to move to Oregon due to her sister Elinor's chronic respiratory disease and the hope that a milder climate would be healing. The family began their new life in Brownsboro, Oregon about 1930 although Elinor died soon after their arrival. They were blessed by the generosity of the Ira Lee Bradshaw family until her parents Harry and Vera Wright were able to buy land and start a general store and post office that served the Brownsboro and Lake Creek communities. Lois attended school in Brownsboro and Eagle Point, graduating from Medford High School in 1939, later attending Southern Oregon Normal School, now Southern Oregon University. She worked as a telephone operator and as a welder in the Portland shipyards during World War II. During the post war years, Lois toured much of the West on an Indian Chief motorcycle. In 1948, she met her future husband Hugh Huntley while they were both working in Alaska. Hugh was also from Montana so they had something in common from the beginning. They were married June 18, 1949 in Medford. Hugh worked as a Medford fireman and later a lineman for COPCO. Lois became a homemaker and mother to the five children that followed. In 1961, the family moved to live on the banks of the Rogue River near Dodge Bridge where Harry Wright had retired. In 1962, the family moved to Alaska with their four children and Gary, their fifth child, was born in Anchorage. On March 27, 1964, Lois and her family survived the Good Friday Earthquake, the second-largest earthquake ever recorded at 9.2 and a duration of 4.5 minutes. On December 22, of that year, after moving back to the River from Alaska, the family was flooded out of their home in the Great Flood of 1964. Undaunted, the family moved back seven weeks later and began again. During the mid 1960s Hugh and Lois developed a trailer park and campground on the property. Hugh passed away suddenly in 1978 and Lois became the proprietor of the business, later settling into a new log home built by her family and friends on the River. Lois believed her purpose in life was to help people and she used her business to reach out to those who were down on their luck, ill, or just needed a hand up. Many people who stayed at Lois' place were blessed by her generosity and compassion. Lois was a founding member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Central Point and St. John Lutheran Church in Eagle Point where she was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. A true patriot, Lois volunteered at the World War II Museum at the VA Domiciliary for many years and was an active member of the Women's Veterans Auxiliary.Lois also wrote regularly to women in prison to encourage them. While Lois rarely spoke of her faith in God, she was a living example of what a Christian should be. Her love for her family was unconditional and she accepted all people just as they were. Her kindness was without end and she led countless people to Christ by her example. All who knew her were blessed and she will be missed dearly. Lois was preceded in death by her sister Elinor, parents Harrison & Vera Wright, her brothers Melvin and William Wright, her husband Hugh Huntley, her son James Huntley and her daughter Carole Erickson. Lois is survived by her sister Dorothy Alvord, her granddaughter Celena Carter, and great-granddaughter Cierra Hoover, her son William Huntley, granddaughter Heather Huntley, grandson James & Karla Huntley, great-granddaughter Shelby, son Abe & Lori Huntley, granddaughter Crystal & Mike Lillie, great-granddaughters Hannah and Brooklyn, grandson Austin Huntley, son Gary Huntley, grandson Justin & Kelsey Huntley and grandson Dillon Huntley. A celebration of Lois' life will be held at 585 Nick Young Rd. in Eagle Point (St. John's Creekside Ministry Campus) on Saturday March 28, 2015 @ 11:00 am. Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to St. John Lutheran School, PO Box 1049, Eagle Point, Ore. 97524.
