Oregon signed 6-foot-10 freshman Roman Sorkin to a financial aid agreement and the Israeli junior national team member is eligible to play for the Ducks immediately. He enrolled at the school on Tuesday afternoon and his addition was announced by the Ducks later in the day. Sorkin, 18, gives Oregon 10 scholarship players and he joins junior center Michael Chandler as the tallest players on the team. Sorkin’s size will be a boost for the Ducks if he can pick up coach Dana Altman’s system quick enough to contribute this season. Chandler has been limited to just 44 minutes in five games this season due to a knee injury. “Michael can help us, but he has a lot of work to do on his conditioning,” Altman said after Chandler played six minutes in Saturday’s 71-59 win over Oregon State. “He’s a good athlete, but he’s been out a long time. His knee has bothered him since February and he still has not gone through a full practice. It is hard to get into shape until you are able to push through a full practice.” Sorkin is from Minsk, Belarus, and averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game at the U18 European Championships last year. He scored 25 points in a win over Hungary and had 24 rebounds against Estonia. During his third year in a row playing in that tournament, Sorkin shot 51.2 percent from the field and 81.2 percent from the free-throw line. Sorkin averaged 4.5 points per game in the 2013 European Championships. “Roman already has a solid skill set from his international experience and still has a tremendous amount of potential for growth,” Altman said in a statement. Oregon (11-3, 1-0) hosts seventh-ranked Arizona (13-1, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
