Mustangs put clamps on Knights' Byers MERLIN -- Robbie Tate's strategy paid off for his Hidden Valley boys basketball team Friday night, as the Mustangs shut down North Valley's Warren Byers in a 53-44 Skyline Conference victory. Byers, the second-leading scorer in conference, was limited to two shots in the first half and seven points overall thanks to the defensive efforts of Andy Sakraida, Matt Kennedy and Danny Reid. "We really did a fantastic job on Warren Byers," Tate said. "That was the key for us tonight. Those three guys really made it tough on him." The Knights' 6-foot-8 center dropped in five of his seven points in the fourth quarter as North Valley cut its deficit from eight points to one with three minutes to play. Undaunted, Hidden Valley's Willie Eisley made a free throw and Dereck Horning added a layup as the Mustangs went on an 11-3 run to secure the victory. Eisley finished with a game-high 16 points, while Horning had 14 and Craig Lee added 13 for the Mustangs (9-8, 5-2 Skyline). Sam Jarrett scored 13 points to pace the Knights (7-8, 4-3 Skyline). ILLINOIS VALLEY 73, PHOENIX 64 -- At Phoenix, Skyline Conference scoring leader Andy Bartels topped the 20-point mark for the third straight game, but the Pirates lost their eighth-straight Skyline contest. Bartels, who entered the game with with a 15.8 average in conference games, led all scorers with 23 points. The game was tied 29-all at halftime, but the Pirates (2-15, 0-7 Skyline) committed eight of their 14 turnovers in the third period when Illinois Valley outscored Phoenix 24-16. ROGUE RIVER 61, LAKEVIEW 45 --Ron Wessels had 28 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to power Rogue River to the Skyline Conference victory. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Wessels, who is expected to sign a NCAA letter of intent to play college football next month, dominated play in the third period when the Chieftains extended a 28-22 halftime lead. Wessels contributed eight points and five blocked shots in the period as the Chiefs extended their lead to 46-33. Ryan Paxson added 14 points for Rogue River (9-6, 4-1 Skyline Conference), which plays host to Henley tonight in a game of Skyline Conference leaders. Derek Strubel's 16 points paced Lakeview.
