Oregon ICE is made up of 10 players from around the state. Barrett, 14, tried out for the team in May. Barrett, a 6-foot-3 post, will be a freshman at Phoenix High this fall. He was the only player from Southern Oregon selected. The ICE returns from the weeklong tournament on Aug. 2, and Barrett will immediately join up with the Phoenix-Talent Babe Ruth team in Nampa, Idaho, at the Pacific Northwest Regional tournament. Tennis Medford’s Kevin Kauffman advanced to the semifinals of United States Tennis Association sanctioned The Players/VTC Grand Slam Tournament in Vancouver, Wash., on Sunday. Kauffman, a North Medford graduate, lost to Tyler Jackson, 6-1, 6-2, in the men’s 5.0 singles semis. Advertisement Kauffman defeated No. 2 seed Kale Kawolwaski in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 7-6. Golf Jack Kendrick notched his first-ever hole-in-one in 45 years of golfing on July 18 at Eagle Point Golf Course. Kendrick used a 5-iron to ace the 177-yard, 13th hole. The shot was witnessed by Steve Forbes. John Ouellet scored a hole-in-one with a 7-iron on the 140-yard second hole at Stone Ridge Golf Course on July 21. Terry Fretz used a 7-iron to score an ace July 23 on the fifth hole at Cedar Links Golf Course. Clark Malmgren, Bill Bednar, Mike Austin and Norm Homeier witnessed the 160-yard hole-in-one. Softball The 14-and-under Black Tornado fastpitch softball team finished fifth in the Region 15 tournament to qualify for nationals in Midland, Texas, Aug. 2-8.
