Local golfers ousted from Amateur By Kevin Goff EAGLE POINT � After a solid round of golf on Tuesday, Rogue Valley Country Club�s Tommy Smith ran out of gas. Match play began Wednesday in the 91st Oregon Amateur Championship at the Eagle Point Golf Club, and Smith eased past Shadow Hills� Brandon Richardson in the morning round of 32, 4 and 3. But in another 18-hole match that afternoon, Smith fell to Bob Harrington in the quarterfinals, 5 and 4. "That�s more rounds of golf than I�ve played in the past three months," said Smith. "I played all right in the morning, but I started to get a little tired towards the end, and he (Harrington) played well." The wheels started coming off with a double-bogey on the 10th hole for Smith. He stayed alive when he drilled a 40-foot birdie putt on the 12th, but Harrington ended any chance for a rally when his birdie try also found the cup from 25 feet out. Harrington now moves on to face Tualatin�s Chris Heniff, who took out Mike Stoll, 4 and 2. Defending champion Ryan Lavoie suffered a 19-hole loss to University of Oregon teammate Brad Mombert. Lavoie was 1 under par for 18 holes, but Mombert�s birdie on the first playoff hole gave him a 1-up win. Mombert faces Eugene�s Jeff Quinney, a 4 and 3 winner over Riverside�s Carl Johnsen. Top-seeded Chris Maletis survived a scare from Geoff Horton with a 1-up triumph. He now matches up with Roseburg�s Brodie Jordan, who advanced with a 5-under-par performance against Spring Hill�s Chris Carnahan. The longest match of the day saw Jim White III of Springfield beat Pleasant Valley�s Denny Taylor on the 23rd hole, their fifth extra hole. White takes on Pumpkin Ridge�s Brian Nosler, who was a 6 and 5 winner over Ryan Nelson of Forest Hills. Nosler also took out Rogue Valley�s Dave Schoenmann, 3 and 2, in the round of 32. Schoenmann held an early lead but couldn�t keep it as the Arizona State University-bound Nosler pulled out the win. Five of the top eight seeds on the women�s side advanced into today�s quarterfinal round. Quail Point�s Tai Kinney took her ninth seeding up against eighth-seeded Lara Tennant. Kinney trailed by one stroke until the 13th, where an errant shot cost her. She parred the remaining holes but couldn�t gain ground on Tennant. "I actually thought I played pretty well, but she just played better," said Kinney. "I missed a few shots here and there and that was it." Tennant moves on to face medalist and top-seeded Jerilyn White. White advanced with a victory over Pumpkin Ridge�s Nicole Keller, 3 and 1. She birdied five times to finish even par while Keller managed three birdies to take the match to 17 holes. Defending champion Charisse Spada also moved on with a 2 and 1 victory over former Crater High player Luneta Ah-Sam of Bear Creek. Spada matches up with Taya Battistella, a winner over Bridget Johnson. In a match that featured 14 Oregon Amateur titles between the two players, Marcia Fisher ousted Mary Budke, 4 and 2. 1999 runner-up Brie Del Bone takes on Allison Hanna after a 5 and 3 win over Jennifer Dodd. Anne Brooksby, a 5 and 4 winner over Cappy Mack-Gray, squares off against Fisher. Today�s men�s quarterfinal matches start at 7:30 a.m. The women�s matches begin at 8:10 a.m. Semifinals follow today at 12:30 and 12:40 p.m. for men and 1 and 1:10 p.m. for women.
