It’s not a complete makeover for the five-passenger sedan from Sweden, but the Drive-E technology is certainly newsworthy. Available in front- or all-wheel drive configurations, the S60 is one of the most popular-selling vehicles in the Volvo lineup — as well as one of the most versatile, providing consumers with a number of options. In all, there are 10 S60 models to choose from, powered by four different powertrains. The major news for the 2015 model year is the addition of Volvo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, a key element in the automaker’s Drive-E powertrain technology designed to enhance fuel economy, reduce emissions and increase driving pleasure. The T5 version produces 240 horsepower and 259 lbs.-ft. torque, and it is able to achieve an EPA fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway. For those who feel the need for even more power, that same engine in the supercharged T6 version generates 302 horsepower and 295 lbs.-ft. torque, yet still achieves a fuel economy rating of 24 mpg city, 36 mpg highway. All-wheel drive models are powered by a 2.5-liter I-5 engine producing 250 horsepower and 266 lbs.-ft. torque. In addition to being able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, S60 models equipped with the 2.5 have a fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. Naturally, the S60 R-Design is still the flagship of the S60 lineup, powered by a 3.0-liter I-6 turbocharged engine generating 325 horsepower and 354 lbs.-ft. torque. The S60 R-Design AWD models have a fuel economy rating of 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. A major component of Volvo’s Drive-E platform is the new eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, which contributes greatly to helping increase fuel efficiency. Coupled with the ECO+ fuel-saving technology — which includes start/stop functionality, ECO-coast to conserve kinetic energy and ECO-climate — Volvo has been able to produce a very responsive sedan without sacrificing fuel economy. I was very impressed with the 2.0 T6 powertrain, which was equipped in this week’s test vehicle. Performance was stellar. The S60 is a great handling vehicle and is very nicely equipped. And, it is absolutely loaded with a long, long, long list of Volvo safety features, including two new features — Sensus Connect and Volvo On-Call. My favorite feature was the new Harmon Kardon Premium Sound system. For those in the market for an upscale, midsize sedan that’s an absolute blast to drive, I highly recommend the 2015 Volvo S60 for a test drive.
