HOPE center needs trained horses The HOPE Equestrian Center, a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding program for disabled children and adults, needs trained horses to add to its growing program. Horses can be leased for a 10- to 12-week session or donated outright to the program at Lighthouse Stables in Eagle Point. Animals should meet the following criteria: geldings preferred but mares acceptable; horses about 15 years old with short, well-muscled backs and are about 15 hands high are the most desirable; must have a mellow temperament and respond readily to cues to walk, trot and slow canter. The horse must also be able to vary the length of its gaits. Many breeds fit the qualifications but organizers said it's important the loaned horses have no unsoundness affecting the gait or back. Horses are used at a walk and trot for two to four hours per day with breaks, often four or five days per week. They are turned out daily and given other exercise as needed.
