"Is the Only Good Playwright a Dead Playwright?" How do you produce plays whose texts are protected ? The Oregon Shakespeare Festival spring lecture series will kick off at noon on Saturday, March 3, at Carpenter Hall, 15 S. Pioneer St., Ashland, with a lecture entitled "Is the Only Good Playwright a Dead Playwright?" by guest dramaturg David Copelin. Among the topics Copelin will address are the challenges of staging the work of authors whose texts are protected by copyright and the Dramatists Guild. David Copelin is the artistic director of Some Strange Reason Theatreworks in Toronto, Canada, as well as playwright-in-residence at The Pleiades Theatre in Toronto. He is a founding member and former president of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. His play "Bella Donna" was awarded "Best Play" at the 2005 Toronto Fringe Festival. His translation of Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi" has been performed at Yale Repertory Theatre and Canada's Shaw Festival. He is also the author of "Practical Playwriting." At the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this season, he serves as dramaturg for this year's productions of "Rabbit Hole," "On the Razzle," "Tartuffe," and "Gem of the Ocean."
