How often have the winners there gone on to be president? — Liz N., via email If it didn't feel like an election year before, it certainly does now that the first two contests are out of the way. It's also about the time of year when winners start crowing about their victories while losers try desperately to minimize their defeats, making it tough to discern just how much impact they have beyond front-page headlines. The Iowa caucuses have been marking the beginning of the election season since 1972, and it has a 43 percent success rate predicting Democratic candidates and a 50 percent clip predicting Republican candidates. Although the Iowa caucuses have an impact, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan were able to win their party's nomination after losing in Iowa. However, a recent Christian Science Monitor article made the point that no candidate who's finished worse than fourth place has gone on to win the nomination. As for the New Hampshire primary, different pundits have different perspectives on just how critical a win there can be, but many agree that because of the timing and the big media coverage, a win there can have a big impact. According to the book "The Making of the Presidential Candidates" by William G. Mayer, a win there can kickstart a candidate's momentum, and the book claims that, on average, a New Hampshire winner gets about 27 percent more votes in the rest of the primaries.
