EDUCATION Grants Pass picks new superintendent from within Comment By Chris Bristol Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Chris Bristol Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Oct. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Chris Bristol Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Oct. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Kirk Kolb has been selected to replace John Higgins as the next superintendent of the Grants Pass School District, school officials announced Tuesday. Kolb, the district's director of technology and instructional improvement, was selected by the school board during a special closed-door meeting Monday, prevailing in a field that included three other finalists for the district's top job. He will succeed Higgins effective July 1. Higgins, who took the helm in 2010, previously announced he was retiring at the end of the current school year. Kolb, 42, started his career 20 years ago as a special education teacher and has been an administrator in the Grants Pass School District for 11 years. He's been principal at Parkside Elementary School, vice principal at North Middle School, and vice principal at Grants Pass High School. Kolb also previously served as the district's special services director and served one year in a special education coordinator position in the Medford School District. A native of Alaska, Kolb earned a bachelor's degree in special education, with a minor in elementary education, from the University of Idaho, as well as a master's degree from Portland State University. His wife, Nikki, is a first-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School. The couple has three daughters, all students in the district. The other three finalists were Robert Bolden, principal of Sheldon High School in Eugene; Deborah Breckner, human resources director for the Three Rivers School District; and Dan Huber-Kantola, human resources director of the Grants Pass School District. The school board plans to formally appoint Kolb at the board's next meeting, at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.
