Since You Asked: Park resurfacing delayed during winter ... Talk will explore history of would-be state of Jefferson Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 30, 2015 at 12:01 PM Updated Jul 30, 2015 at 12:02 PM Posted Jul. 30, 2015 at 12:01 PM Updated Jul 30, 2015 at 12:02 PM » Social News The would-be state of Jefferson — proposed half in jest, half in earnest — will be the topic of the next Windows in Time history program. The talk, "The State of Jefferson: The Evolution of an Idea" will be given Aug. 5 at the Medford Library, 205 S. Central Ave., and Aug. 12 at the Ashland Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Both start at noon, and admission is free. The state of Jefferson concept — as an idea for a separate new state made up from northern-most California and southwestern-most Oregon — dates back to the early 1850s. It is an idea that has waxed and waned over the past 160 years. In his talk, historian Jeff LaLande will explore this subject, focusing particularly on how the region's various "secession" movements have differed in their seriousness and in their origins. LaLande worked for more than 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service as an archaeologist and historian. He graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., received his master's degree in archaeology from Oregon State University and his doctorate in history from the University of Oregon. He has published articles and several books on regional history. Sponsored by Jackson County Library Services and the Southern Oregon Historical Society, the Windows in Time lunchtime lectures are offered monthly. For more, call 541-774-6996 or 541-773-6536.
