The former two-time national champion and a U.S. Olympic alternate earned a second-round KO in the ring and received positive feedback from April’s Rogue Valley Rumble, which was the area’s first professional fight card in nearly 30 years. “Looking back at the first one, we hit the nail right on the head,” says the Central Points resident, who again has his hands full while serving multiple roles. Rogue Valley Rumble 2 Summer Showdown is Saturday at Compton Arena at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Doors open for the seven-fight event at 6 p.m., with boxing at 7. In the main and final event, Wilson (11-0 with five knockouts) will take on Juan Reyna of Brownsville, Texas (5-4 with two knockouts) in a cruiserweight bout. Reyna had over 80 fights as an amateur and began his pro career in 2011, going 4-0 in the first year. “That kid, I watched tape on him, he’s an experienced kid,” Wilson says. “He’s not one of those kids who is undefeated because he always fights a tough fight.” The two will fight in a 10-round bout. In the six-fight undercard, Javier Torres of Long Beach, Calif., faces DJ Linderman of Yreka, Calif., at heavyweight. Torres is 8-0-2 with three KOs. He made the 2008 Olympics squad for Mexico. He also won a Silver medal at the 2009 U.S. National Super Heavyweight Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., and is a two-time Jr. Olympic National Champion. Torres, who was born in Medford, has been inactive for over a year. Linderman is 0-1 as a professional boxer but 18-9 in mixed martial arts. “I’m really excited for that fight,” Wilson says. “DJ is tough as nails. Javier may have more skill, but DJ is all heart.” The other fights are Medford’s Rafael Valencia (2-0 with two KOs) facing Brandon Maddox of Sacramento, Calif., (1-0, one KO) at 165 pounds; Medford’s Randy Rogers (2-1) vs. LaQuan Williams of Portland (0-1) at 195 pounds; Portland’s Gabriel Pineda (4-1-2) vs. Ricardo Maldonado of Arlington, Wash. (4-3) at 140 pounds; Corbin Page of Eugene (5-10-1) vs. Juan Jaramillo of Salem (8-12-2 and three KOs) at 132 pounds; and Medford’s Jose Cabrera (0-3) vs. Portland’s Benjamin Vinson (1-3 with one KO) at 129 pounds. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Hawaiian Hut in Central Point and Bobbio’s Pizza in Medford and Central Point. General admission is $17, $13 for kids 12 and under and free for children 4 and under. Tickets at the door are $20 general admission and $15 for 12 and under. Ringside tables are also available. Some tickets and T-shirts will be given away. Wilson has enjoyed juggling his roles as an event organizer, fighter and everyday working man. After getting the experience of staging professional boxing in April, he feels much more at ease this time around. One slight change from that event is that tickets are all general admission, aside from ringside table seating. Aluminum bleachers will be used this time. “Knowing we have done it before, it’s just more relaxed,” he says. “That first one was kind of like having a blindfold on. But we did everything we were supposed to do, put together a well-matched card and people showed up. We always get great support out here. “There is no place like home.” In the ring, Wilson says he’s riding momentum that he gained with his victory in April. He’s logged many road miles and has done sprint workouts in the summer heat since. He’s easing up this week, allowing his body to rest and recover leading up to the main event. “In the past we would wait to get on a card, get in shape, fight and not have another card for another year,” Wilson says. “You get rusty and you get into the everyday grind of life. This time we just took a little time off and we’re right back at it. We are full force.” Wilson says he hopes to continue to provide a “classy” atmosphere with “old-school boxing, like something you would see in the 1960s with fight nights.” Reach reporter Dan Jones at 541-776-4499, or email [email protected].
