LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 2 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News A better alternative The guest opinion by Kerr and Stevens, “Clearcutting is wrong approach for counties” (March 15) leaves a reader with the impression that the only two alternatives to provide funding for schools are the Secure Rural Schools Act (SRS) or destructive clearcutting of publicly owned forests. SRS depends on taxpayer funding. A better funding alternative would be responsible management of federal forest lands for the full range of benefits for which they were originally established, including watershed protection, recreation, fish and wildlife habitat and timber production. Managing the best-suited forest areas to provide valuable wood products would not only provide funding to counties, but also create well-paying jobs and many other benefits to local economies. Responsible management would include harvesting mature timber followed by replanting, thinning trees to maximize growth and reduce fire hazards, as well as salvaging dead and dying trees, including fire-killed timber. A model for environmentally responsible and sustainable forestry is being carried out on private forests which, in the absence of federal timber production, are now providing most of the raw materials to this country’s remaining wood products mills. With prudent management of publicly owned forests, our country can grow all of the wood we need forever. Dave Dealey Medford The purpose of government About the LNG line coming through our part of Oregon, I would like to address this letter to all the states rights/tea partiers in southwest Oregon. I see your flags flying in the Applegate with strong sentiments about limiting government and staying out of the way of free enterprise. This gets different when free enterprise shoves a 36-inch pipeline through your property, our county, under our rivers, and all for a corporation that is using our state because it can’t permit this pipeline in its own country. The gas won’t flow through California or Washington or any Canadian province; it’s coming to Shady Cove because we won’t protect our state. Liberty means showing strength when threatened — that’s what our Founders did. This project threatens our safety, our sovereignty and our ability to govern on our own terms. The purpose of this letter is to show that government has an important purpose: to regulate, to insure the values we all hold dear are protected and the politics of money and influence-buying are held in check. Think about this the next time you look at our beloved Rogue River. Jim Akins Phoenix Bees are not benign The City of Medford is considering an ordinance that would allow beehives. We've had illegal beehives on adjacent property and can testify that beehives are not as benign as the hobbyists supporting this change would like you to believe. Bees zero in on water sources such as, in our case, a hot tub, and once having done so will swarm there and drown themselves in great numbers (search Google for "honey bees and hot tubs"), and you will be stuck with the problem. Also, if you have flowering plants, they'll visit in large numbers (i.e. large enough to create an audible buzz). I note that the ordinance does require a six-foot "flyover" barrier, but we can also testify that it doesn't work, as we have a six-foot solid fence that is right next to where the neighbor's hives were kept, and we still had swarms of bees in our yard and on our deck. So, if you don't want to be subjected to swarms of bees, please contact the City Council and let them know you don't want beehives in the city.
