Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford will receive 257 beds, Ashland Community Hospital in Ashland will get 32 new beds and Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass will get 127 new beds. The new equipment will be funded by revenue bonds expected to be approved by the Medford City Council Thursday. Lauren Van Sickle, Asante spokeswoman, said the new beds, which cost $4 million total, will be safer and healthier for patients and workers. Van Sickle said the new beds will be easier to maneuver for patients being transported to operating rooms or for other medical procedures and are designed to prevent back injuries among workers. They also will provide additional comfort and safety to patients and help prevent skin breakdown, commonly known as bed sores. The hospital system uses a variety of bed styles, which makes training more difficult. The new beds will allow for more consistent staff training, Van Sickle said. Replacement of the beds at Asante hospitals is expected to be completed by April 23. Five models of Hill-Rom beds were ordered to suit a variety of specific patient needs. Patient monitors in the critical care center at RRMC also will be replaced, at a cost of $3.8 million. Some of the other highlights of the medical equipment upgrade include a $1.4 million camera system that will be used in the operating room. “It improves image clarity so surgeons can see better what they’re doing,” Van Sickle said. The Stryker 1488 High Definition Camera System is a wireless, high-definition video resolution system that is used for arthroscopy, general surgery and gynecological and urological surgeries. Three Rivers will receive an $832,000 nuclear medicine computerized tomography (CT) full-body scan. Asante will buy various other equipment for the three hospitals.
