The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife was prepared to ask the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today for the short seasons planned for the Coos, Coquille and Umpqua rivers, as well as Tenmile Lakes, for wild coho, which are listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. However, agency biologists opted Tuesday to scrap that plan due to concerns over poor ocean survival and low in-river returns this year, says Christine Mallette, ODFW's ocean salmon technical resources manager in Salem. The wild coho seasons for Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes between Reedsport and Florence, however, will remain as scheduled, Mallette says. Those lakes, which are connected to the ocean by creeks, have regular standing fisheries while the other bays get seasons on a yearly basis depending upon wild coho forecasts, Mallette says. Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes were the first West Coast water bodies where sport anglers could have a shot at keeping a threatened fish species. Those seasons began in 2003. The bag limit remains one wild coho per day in either Siltcoos or Tahkenitch. This week's changes don't impact ocean fisheries or in-river catch-and-release fishing on wild coho in places like the Rogue River, which also sports a run of fin-clipped hatchery fish that can be kept as part of the daily two-fish limit. Bike the Rogue taking reservations Cyclists can save money by making reservations now for the seventh annual Bike the Rogue event focused around the lower Rogue River and Pacific out of Gold Beach. The event features three different rides on low-traffic roads in and around Gold Beach, with all three routes following the banks of the Rogue and across two bridges. They include a 25-mile ride with 1,100 vertical feet of climbing, a 40-mile ride with 2,000 feet of elevation gain, and a 100-kilometer ride with 4,000 feet of climbing. The 40-mile and 100-kilometer rides finish at the ocean. Entry fees include a free ticket to the Gold Beach Brew Fest that weekend. That's a $15 value. Those who register online before Sept. 1 save $5 per rider.
