LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 19 MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 19, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted May. 19, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Lane filtering is safe I was surprised to see that the editors of the Mail Tribune argued for increasing the speed limit but gave a thumbs down on lane filtering by scooters and motorcycles. While it's permitted in California, legislatures in Texas and Washington along with Oregon are currently considering bills to allow the practice. The Mail Trib argument seems to be about safety. Let us look at the facts from California. As recently reported in the Sacramento Bee, a year-long study showed that lane filtering (lane splitting) is no more dangerous than motorcycling in general. The lane-splitting rider has less of a chance of being rear-ended. Motorcycles seem to be hard to see when they are sitting behind a parked or slow moving vehicle. Other benefits not addressed in the study include the fact that scooter mileage is amazing, travel times are decreased, and higher rates of scooter and motorcycle usage are encouraged with the result of less pollution. When folks (usually a single driver) in a car (cage) see folks scooting past, maybe they will consider commuting in an environmentally friendly way. As the Trib editorial hinted: It just does not seem to be fair sitting there in your cage while people on motorcycles scoot past with smiles on their faces. Dale Smith Ashland Support Tilley Case I would like to ask you to support Cindy Tilley Case for another term on the Central Point District 6 School Board. Cindy has been a part of the Gold Hill community all of her life. While her boys attended Patrick and Hanby schools, she was an active participant in committee work, PTA meetings and attendance at many school functions. As a school board member for 20 years, she has stayed with the position and has not given up when the policies changed. She listens and works well with people. Cindy has always wanted a strong curriculum for the students, along with high expectations, so they will go on to be independent and self-reliant, regardless of whether they move on to college or prepare for a career of their choice. District 6 has remained strong, with a continued good reputation during the years that Cindy represented our three school areas. Rebecca Estremado Gold Hill TPP is treasonous It was good to see that Congress voted down the TPP fast track, but is still not dead. The media has covered the debate over job loss, but the biggest issue is sovereignty of our existing trade laws. According to the information snuck out of the negotiations, we must buy products from sources dictated by the TPP trade agreement. This agreement supersedes all other laws or agreements by any participating county. This means an international tribunal governed by the multinational corporations can force buy as dictated by them. For the president or Congress to give away our rights is crazy, even treasonous. The fight to stop TPP must continue! Dave Hyde Ashland Made my day It’s not often that the editorial board of the MT and I see eye to eye. But, I must say, they made my day on Wednesday morning, May 13, when I read the editorial page and saw this message: EDITOR’S NOTE: Leonard Pitts did not file a column for today’s paper.” Now, editors, make my weekend with a note saying Gene Lyons didn’t file a column for Sunday’s paper! The less I see of the left-wing vitriol spewed by these two columnists, the better.
