COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ducks gear up for title game Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 6, 2015 @ 8:32 pm Updated Jan 6, 2015 at 8:33 PM By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 6, 2015 @ 8:32 pm Updated Jan 6, 2015 at 8:33 PM » Social News Marcus Mariota wasn’t the big man on campus Monday. The University of Oregon’s winter term began, but the Ducks’ Heisman Trophy winner hasn’t enrolled in any classes. Mariota, who has already graduated from UO with a degree in general science and is considered the top prospect for the 2015 NFL draft, still has over a week to decide whether to return to school or turn pro. “I’m actually going to talk to my adviser,” said Mariota, who still has a lease for an apartment in Eugene. “There’s several things that I have to do, but I’m going to try and see if I can get into some classes.” According to Oregon, Mariota has until Jan. 14 to enroll. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft is Jan. 15. Right now, the star quarterback’s focus is on preparing the Ducks for the Jan. 12 national championship game against Ohio State at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (5:30 p.m., ESPN). The team began on-field preparations inside the Moshofsky Center on Monday and will continue practicing in Eugene this week until traveling to Dallas on Friday. There will be a media day on Saturday and a coaches press conference on Sunday, but fewer distractions for the first College Football Playoff title game than there were for Oregon’s national semifinal against Florida State at the Rose Bowl. No Disneyland, no Lawry’s Beef Bowl, no TMZ cameras at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. “Last week our emphasis was to treat it as much like a regular game as much as possible. It’s kind of hard when you’re down at the Rose Bowl, you have all those great events that we got to go to,” center Hroniss Grasu said. “While we’re down here, it’s normal. The only thing that is different for me right now is I’m staying in a hotel rather than my old apartment. I moved home right before Christmas, I moved all my stuff home. I’ve got a rental car.” Grasu is among the veteran players who has graduated and does not have to enroll at UO this week to be eligible for the game. “I think it’s a big advantage. We’re able to really focus and get a jump on one thing,” said senior linebacker Derrick Malone, who has also graduated and is spending his final week at Oregon preparing for the biggest game of his career. “While everyone’s in class, we’re getting a jump on studying (Ohio State film). So when (the other players) do come back over here, we can tell them what we’ve seen.” All of the Buckeyes have a singular focus. Ohio State’s spring semester begins on game day next Monday. “It’s weird in some sense, because it is not just another game, but it is just another week of fall. We’re in school, they are not, so that is a little bit of a nuance to it,” coach Mark Helfrich said. “We had a plan for this and we built that plan last summer. The guys have done a phenomenal job executing our long-term plan. “So logistically, the time of day and how we practice is the same, but obviously what we do during those times will be different from when we started week one to now.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Jan. 6, 2015 @ 8:32 pm Updated Jan 6, 2015 at 8:33 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Vegas Odds, Top Fantasy Picks for Saturday Divisional Games Jan. 10, 2015 at 9:00 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Sunday Jan. 10, 2015 at 6:48 am Fantasy League Guide to Divisional Saturday Jan. 9, 2015 at 6:23 am Best FanDuel, DraftKings 2015 Divisional Lineup Advice Jan. 8, 2015 at 7:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Prediction for Ravens vs. Pats Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am Latest Odds, Stat Predictions for Panthers vs. Seahawks Jan. 7, 2015 at 8:00 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
