Barrett took that one step further Saturday by tossing a no-hitter in the first game of a Skyline Conference softball doubleheader against North Valley. Despite committing seven errors on the day, Phoenix blanked the Knights 6-0 behind Barrett, then posted a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. Barrett had six strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. "(Barrett) had good use of the changeup," North Valley coach Jeff Conard said. "Her rise ball was real effective and she moved the ball around." Advertisement The Pirates (11-6, 9-2 Skyline) scored all the runs they would need in the fourth on a walk to Terra Frey, a single by Jaclyn Unruh and an RBI double by Barrett. Alex Hanscom then reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, and a second run scored on an error. Tawnya Tidwell followed with an RBI single. An RBI single by Unruh, who went 3-for-3 in the game, and Hanscom’s RBI double highlighted the Pirates’ three-run seventh. In Game 2, Nicole Engle helped a three-hit, eight-strikeout pitching performance with two hits and three RBIs. Shonda George went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI for the Skyline-leading Pirates. For North Valley (6-11, 5-8 Skyline), Sara Ruatta walked twice and scored two runs. "All day they did a great job of clutch hitting," said Conard. "They’re playing good ball right now. They didn’t get rattled with their errors. They’re a very disciplined team." ILLINOIS VALLEY 9-6, HIDDEN VALLEY 1-1 — At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley used a seven-run sixth inning to pull away from Hidden Valley in the opener. IV’s offense came through in the sixth, led by an RBI triple from Erika Riley and a two-run single from Samantha Hoskins. Meghan Jackson added two RBIs and Ricci Coultas two hits for the Cougars. For Hidden Valley, Destinee Hernandez and Jeni Spurling each doubled. In the second game, IV senior pitcher Serena Barry notched a bases-loaded, two-run single in the first inning. Barry, who has started every game for IV, allowed only five hits. Jessica Ragsdale, Coultas and Riley each had two hits for IV. HENLEY 3-5, MAZAMA 2-4 — At Klamath Falls, Henley’s Nikki Hargrave drove in the game-winning run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to give the Hornets the extra-inning victory in the opener. Hargrave also notched seven strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning, while teammate Sierra Patzke added two hits. Vanessa Pisan had eight strikeouts in a losing effort for Mazama. In Game 2, Hargrave again helped Henley to victory, this time driving in Alisa Wedam to break a fifth-inning tie. Henley’s Traci Pastore added a triple, Kristin Brunelle a double and Wedam doubled with two RBIs. For Mazama, Chelsea Whitely had a double, a triple and four RBIs. In Game 1, Cascade Christian took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but went into the seventh with the score tied at 6-all. Chiloquin’s Amy Hescock had a two-run double and Bradley an RBI triple to help their team pull away with a five-run seventh inning. Casandra Hawthorn went 2-for-3 in both games for the Challengers (1-11, 1-7 District 6).
