Parmalee leads the way fro North Valley WINSTON - Douglas supplied the home hospitality and Cole Parmalee and crew did the rest for North Valley as the Knights posted a non-conference football win Friday night. Douglas turned the ball over six times, with Ken Hiler intercepting two passes for the Knights, as North Valley held the Trojans to 98 yards rushing and 78 through the air. North Valley countered with 191 yards on the ground and 58 through the air. "Our defense played exceptionally well," said North Valley coach John George. Colin Beard staked North Valley (2-0) to an early lead with a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Cole Parmalee added a 39-yard TD reception from quarterback Tim Cunha to make it 14-0 heading into the second quarter. After an Ariah Nead 4-yard score made it 21-0, Parmalee burst Douglas' balloon when he opened the second half with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Parmalee finished the game with three receptions for 58 yards, while Beard rushed 10 times for 131 yards for the Knights. North Valley will open Skyline Conference play next Friday with a road game against Illinois Valley. The Pirates (1-2) had taken a 28-14 third-quarter lead behind the rushing of senior tailback Eric Kessler, who picked up 127 yards on 25 carries. The Lancers countered with senior tailback Dave McElmurry, who scored four touchdowns and compiled 206 yards on 25 rushes. With about a minute to play, McElmurry went 49 yards with a pass from Zack Falk, then booted his fourth extra point to tie it at 28-28. Phoenix quickly drove down the field, largely on the strength of a long connection between senior quarterback Ross Ellis and senior receiver Floron McGee. But then Ratford rushed in untouched on the Pirates' field goal attempt, stole the ball from Phoenix's holder and used a convoy of blockers and a broken tackle at midfield to win it for South Umpqua. Illinois Valley drove 51 yards and scored on a 1-yard run by Natty Krauss with 2:34 remaining before halftime. Jon Pope ran in the two-point conversion to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead. Pope scored the first of two Cougar third-quarter touchdowns on an 11-yard run. Mike Pagnotta accounted for the other TD on a 35-yard interception return. Illinois Valley totaled 250 yards in offense, with 225 coming on the ground. Pope led the rushing attack with 120 yards on 16 carries. Bandon had 124 yards rushing and another 29 through the air, but most of the Tigers' yards came in the first half. Tim VanderStoel registered touchdown runs of 5 and 53 for the Mustangs, but Brookings-Harbor countered with 277 yards of offense to avenge last season's 43-19 blowout loss. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound senior running back scored on a 1-yard plunge to open the game, then added TDs from 35, 40, 39 and 14 yards out. The Vikings trailed 20-13 at the half, but were dominated to a 27-6 count in the second half. Brian Kinsman was the Hornets' offensive leader in receptions and rushing. Kinsman had five catches for 147 yards and rushed eight times for 59. The senior running back caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Gauntz in the fourth quarter. Gauntz completed just eight of 20 passes, but they went for 225 yards. Gauntz's other touchdown pass was a 37-yarder to Morgan Grohs in the third quarter. The Hornets also picked up 146 yards on the ground. Myrtle Point had 101 yards rushing and 77 passing.
