A Jackson County Circuit Court jury found Adan Manuel Valdez, 35, guilty of the crimes Wednesday night. Valdez, who has a felony criminal history and is believed to have been involved with the Sureños gang, was sentenced to 17 years and eight months in prison. "I think the jury took their job very seriously and listened to all the evidence," Jackson County Deputy District Attorney Virginia Greer said Thursday. "They came to a reasonable decision given all the evidence they were presented with." Valdez was acquitted on a charge of felon in possession of a restricted weapon after defense attorney Robert Graham argued only a knife handle without a blade was presented as evidence in connection with that charge. Greer said Valdez was offered a plea agreement before the trial but turned down the offer. She declined to reveal details of the offer. On May 29, 2013, Valdez and a woman were walking in Union Park near Plum Street when a car pulled up. In a videotaped interview with police, Valdez said the occupants beat him unconscious and stole clothing, jewelry, about $425 cash and other belongings. Prosecutors said Valdez was out later that evening hunting for revenge on his BMX bike when he accosted Gildardo Flores-Ramirez, then later chased him into a house on Plum Street, broke in and stabbed him four times in the abdomen, back and hand. Prosecutors said the victim suffered defensive knife wounds to his hand when he blocked Valdez from stabbing him in the neck. A BMX bike was found at Valdez's home. Valdez's coat was found in the house with a blood stain. The stain tested positive for the stabbing victim's DNA. Greer said Valdez essentially admitted to the crime when he apologized to the victim and said, "I'm sorry I stabbed you. I got the wrong guy." Valdez is scheduled to go on trial again next week for allegedly menacing two men in July 2012.
