I had backpacked the Rogue River Trail and into the Seven Lakes area. The thought of hiking from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada intrigued me, but I couldn’t imagine how to manage it. I couldn’t leave my young children or my career for six to eight months. Finally I realized I could hike a few days at a time, starting here in Southern Oregon. I hiked with a friend from Mount Ashland to Hyatt Lake, then from Seiad Valley to Callahan’s. I continued hiking one- to six-day sections as weather and my schedule allowed. There were years I didn’t hike at all. Activities with my children, caring for my elderly parents, then grandchildren all demanded my time. Still the desire to complete the trail never left me. I hiked when time and weather allowed. Sometimes I hiked with friends or with my sons. As sections got farther away, plans were harder to coordinate. I began to hike with my standard poodle Sultan. He is very protective of me and good company, though not much of a conversationalist. There are benefits and disadvantages to hiking the PCT in sections. Areas can be hiked when the weather and trail conditions are optimal, and with a much lighter pack. A person can take longer, really enjoying the sights and experiences encountered. Outings can be scheduled around work and family obligations, and the body is not under excessive stress for six to eight months. On the other hand, it is much more expensive making numerous trips to starting and stopping points, and the feet, muscles and joints must repeatedly adjust to the rigors of the trail. When I completed Southern and Central Oregon and Northern California, transportation became a huge challenge. Family and friends couldn’t drive eight hours to drop me off, then another eight or nine hours to pick me up. I had to research an area and call outdoor supply stores, motels, campgrounds and country stores to find someone interested in being paid to shuttle me in my car. I found people at the Whitewater Preserve, Cajon Pass, Acton, Hikers’ Heaven, Lake Isabella, Whites’ Pass, Steven’s Pass, Chelan and Harts Pass. Every person who drove me was dependable, and my car was never damaged. Due to my work schedule as a teacher, I was unable to complete Northern Washington or the California desert until after I retired. My final section was through the Mojave. I completed it in October, November and December of 2014. Unfortunately, I had to skip 200 miles of the Sierras due to extreme altitude sickness. I encountered elk, marmots, mountain goats, a badger, bears and rattlesnakes. I was challenged by snow, ice, electrical storms, heat and drought. I swam in lakes and rivers, and gloried in beautiful landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and clear starry nights. My life was enriched by my adventures on the trail. I am proud to have accomplished 2,453 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, and am excited about adventures to come. Kathy Yeoman lives in Medford.
