Police remove man from crest trail MOUNT THIELSEN -- Police escorted a man Sunday off the Pacific Crest Trail after the man's father said he had marital problems, had not eaten for several days and had a .38-caliber pistol. Officers secured the area and warned hikers away until they and a family friend, Ken Wilson, found Richard Vandonk Jr., 44, of Chemult. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg for evaluation. Wilson had escorted Vandonk off the mountain several days earlier. According to Wilson, Vandonk said he wanted to be left on the rock where Wilson found him rather than be buried in a cemetery. U.S. Forest Service workers and a Douglas County sheriff's deputy, Herman Foster, learned Saturday that Vandonk's father was going up Mount Thielsen to look for his son. Neither Vandonk was dressed for cool weather. Richard Vandonk Sr. was found Sunday on Highway 138 by its junction with Diamond Lake. Sheriff's deputies said he was cold and tired but in good spirits.
