This man has done nothing but self-promotion at our expense. He missed over 30 meetings while spending so much on himself and his wife he is now being investigated by not only the Ethics Commission but the Oregon Justice Department. I am a thinking Republican and am now being embarrassed not only on the national scene but at the local level also. I guess the Jackson County Republican Party figures that if Americans can be persuaded to vote for Trump they aren't smart enough to see through the contempt shown at the local level either. Shame on us. Tom Zimmerman Phoenix Re-think the language School dress codes are a good idea, I think most of us can agree on that. But what about the language we use when we explain their necessity? I recently overheard the reasoning behind this explained to a young girl who was given a warning for a too-short hemline: "Because it is distracting to the boys." Wait a minute, this sounds familiar. Is this where this disconnect begins in our culture? As early as elementary school, we begin teaching the idea that our daughters are responsible for their male classmates' actions, in turn telling our sons that they are not responsible for, and have no control over, their behavior toward girls. I truly hope that this will be the only example of this misleading cultural belief in all of our daughters' lives in an institutional setting. I hope not one finds herself in a police station being asked how short her skirt was, how much she had to drink, if she was wearing lipstick. In other words, how she had provoked a hapless boy with no accountability or self-control into a sexual assault. Perhaps re-thinking the language of these conversations could help avoid that. Jamila Elliott Medford Freeway village The freeway strikes through the heart of Medford and provides a wide swath of concrete cover against wind and rain. Find the best spot and install portable potties, garbage disposal containers, barbecue pits and picnic tables. Bring in tents, sleeping bags, cooking utensils and cookware. The homeless will come. They will figure their own landings within the natural confines of the area designated. Millions of campers abound nationwide in our forests. Let's do this in the heart of Medford, with freeway protection. Instead of spending hundreds of thousands on real estate, spend thousands instead, clearing freeway undercover. The homeless will enjoy ownership of the donated possessions. The freedom to come and go as they please will be valued. The centrally located homeless park will be treasured. Gone will be gravel, concrete, density, small, confined, bare structures, hosts of rules and regulations, high liability, landlord-tenant legal agreements and costly overhead. Should uncontrolled drinking, drugs or violence occur, the tents will be taken away, along with the other structures. Police would patrol. The inhabitants would police themselves. Freeway villages built in the heart of Medford. Ownership by and for all Medfordites. Turn our freeway into a blessing. James Work Central Point Keep Crain For many years I have watched as Judge Patricia Crain has shown compassion and fairness to the participants of Community Family Court and our local drug courts. Judge Crain has changed so many lives because she genuinely cares about the families in her courtrooms. Please vote to keep Judge Crain on the bench. Mo Waite Medford Vote for Orr David Orr is the right choice for Jackson County Circuit Court judge. With experience as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney, David has seen the criminal justice system from both sides. As a child abuse prosecutor, he seeks justice for the most vulnerable victims and vigorously prosecutes perpetrators. At the same time, he also strongly supports drug court and other diversion programs that address the root causes of crime and keep nonviolent offenders out of the system. David holds himself and the entire criminal justice system to the highest ethical standards. He refuses to accept campaign contributions to avoid any suggestion of influence. The citizens of Jackson County deserve to choose their own judges rather than wait for an incumbent to retire mid-term so that the governor can name her replacement. I urge my fellow citizens to vote for David Orr as Jackson County Circuit Court judge.
