Handcuffed and clad in a protective vest, Wade Eugene Phillips appeared calm and collected when seen by video from the Jackson County Jail as Judge Adam Peterson walked him through the arraignment process. Phillips, 42, is charged with murder in the death of his wife, 37-year-old Cynthia Michelle Phillips, as well as three counts of attempted murder. According to a district attorney's information filed Wednesday by District Attorney Beth Heckert, the attempted murder charges stem from allegations that Wade Phillips "unlawfully and intentionally attempt(ed) to cause the death" of the couple's child, Morgan Phillips, as well as two others — identified as Nicholas Bozarth and Cheyenne Smith. The probable cause statement for Phillips' arrest and detention is sealed under court order. Under Measure 11 guidelines, Peterson said, Phillips is ineligible for bail and will be held pending trial. He's next scheduled to appear in court Nov. 19 for a preliminary hearing. Jackson County sheriff's deputies discovered Cynthia Phillips' body around 9 a.m. Tuesday after 911 dispatchers took a call reporting that shots had been fired and a woman injured at 6522 Truax Road, in an unincorporated area of Central Point. Deputies found her dead inside the residence and, after identifying her husband as a suspect, called in the Sheriff's Office SWAT team — along with an Oregon State Police robot — to conduct a door-to-door search of the neighborhood. Deputies eventually found Wade Phillips about 3:15 p.m., hiding in a corner of the couple's attic. This isn't the first time one of Wade Phillips' significant others has been the victim of foul play. On July 25, 1999, his estranged wife, 22-year-old Dawn Rene Phillips, was one of three people killed by Robert Staudinger after a domestic dispute in a trailer in Tumalo, near Bend. Staudinger is serving life without parole at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla after being convicted of seven counts of aggravated murder and first-degree abuse of a corpse. The Oregonian reported at the time that Wade and Dawn Phillips had filed for divorce the previous November, but that it was unclear whether the divorce had been finalized. The Central Point shooting is under investigation by the county's Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit, which draws detectives from multiple local agencies.
