Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 19, 2005 Police call off search for missing motorist By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune TALENT — Police have suspended their search for a missing man whose truck was found abandoned on Wagner Creek Road. Thomas Merrill Perry’s white Toyota 4Runner was found at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near the entrance of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, police said. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies were alerted to the spot after a reporter for the Ashland Daily Tidings received an anonymous tip Wednesday night that there was a body lying beside the 4Runner. The reporter contacted the sheriff’s department who sent deputies to search the area, Detective Sgt. Rich Fogarty said. No body was found and police are treating it as a missing person case. Sheriff’s deputies sent two search dogs to the area Thursday but failed to find Perry. The steep, rocky terrain made it difficult for the dogs to search more than 200 yards in each direction of the truck, Fogarty said. "There’s nothing out of the ordinary with the truck," Fogarty said. "It was locked when we found it and it had gas in the tank. There’s no indication that he left in a hurry." Advertisement The area is popular with campers and mountain bikers. Acquaintances of Perry told deputies that he is an outdoorsman. "There’s a good chance he’s out in the woods living it up with friends," Fogarty said. According to court records, Perry’s last known address was the 1300 block of Wilson Road in Ashland. Friends told police that he has been living out of his truck recently. "We found no indication that he was living out of the truck, no sleeping bags or anything like that," Fogarty said. Deputies have called off the search for now. Fogarty said police will now wait for new leads as to his possible whereabouts. "There are so many possibilities here," Fogarty said. "The only reason we pursued it like we have is because of the odd way in which it was reported to begin with."
