She and her associates are big fans of the pungent bulb, and it flavors many dishes and sides on chef Shaun Ray's menu. Hoevet — a full-time graduate student at Southern Oregon University — and her husband, general manager Tyler, are working partners at The Point. The Hoevets and two other Rogue Valley couples partnered in late 2013 to clean up and operate the restaurant at 311 E. Pine St., formerly known as Rostel's, then The Brick. Gone are the half-wall that separated the dining room and the poker machines that sat along the west wall. The restaurant and lounge now have a light and airy ambiance that holds fast to the building's 126-year-old charm with its original brick work and high ceilings. A friend and I spent a lovely couple of hours catching up over a weeknight supper at The Point. I hadn't visited the eatery in years, and it was pleasing to see the owners had taken care to showcase the historical building's finer points. Dinner is served after 4 p.m., and there is a selection of chicken, seafood and steaks to choose from. Not keen on beef, we chose seafood. In fact, the repast was entirely based on salmon. We ordered an appetizer from the list of weekly chef specials — smoked salmon bruschetta ($10) — and a roasted salmon filet prepared with a miso-base soy sauce and salmon stuffed with house-made crab mousse ($19 each) as main courses. Although there was a prime rib dinner on the specials menu that enticed. We'd nearly finished our wine before the appetizer arrived at our table. It turned out the fish was still in the restaurant's smoker when we ordered. Worth the wait, the shredded bits were delicious with balsamic, Parmesan and house-baked crostini. The miso-roasted salmon was sprinkled with a smattering of sesame seeds. The sides included young, tender green beans with almonds and creamy risotto — seasoned with garlic. The stuffed salmon was topped with a remarkable and delicious grape beurre blanc sauce which complemented the fish and the strongly flavored garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed seasonal vegetables. The chef also prefers his pasta dishes on the al dente side, and the risotto wasn't as tender as I would have liked. It's a personal thing. Many diners prefer al dente to tender. The twice-baked mac 'n' cheese on the happy hour and late-night menu is served al dente and is wildly popular, Sarah Hoevet says. It's macaroni swimming in cheddar and sour cream sauce, topped with seasoned bread crumbs and bacon ($7). There's also chicken and bacon mac 'n' cheese ($13) on the pub's starters menu. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, The Point's hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
