Greg Walden. McColgan sought the nomination in 2002, but was beaten by Ashland resident Peter Buckley, who announced Tuesday his Democratic bid for the state Legislature. McColgan, a pro-life Democrat, said he will run as an opponent of the war in Iraq, the increasing federal deficit, a shift of funding from domestic to military needs and the doctrine of pre- emptive war. "I hope to attract independents and moderate Republicans who question the war and who look at the federal deficit as a ticking time bomb that will blow away the hopes of baby boomers to have Social Security and Medicare waiting for them when they retire starting in seven years," McColgan said. McColgan, who was local chairman for the Michael Dukakis presidential campaign in 1986 and went to the national convention as a platform representative, will officially announce his candidacy at the Jackson County Democratic Central Committee meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at JJ North’s in Medford.
