New law allows use of fog lights I thought there was a law against driving with auxiliary lights on when approaching other traffic. It seems more and more vehicles have these lights. Most these lights are not adjusted right and blind the oncoming traffic. What is the fine for violating this law? While you're at it, what's the law on dimming your lights when approaching other vehicles? What's the fine for violating that law? -- Jim S., Medford It seems there's some wriggle room in the laws governing the use of auxiliary lights, Jim. When a vehicle is traveling and using both its auxiliary, or day-time running lights, and its headlights, it doesn't mean the driver has violated any laws, said Oregon State Police patrol Sgt. Ralph Nelson. Most newer-model vehicles are equipped with lights that come on automatically during the day time. These lights can be used with headlights for night driving, as long as the total number of lights used does not exceed four, according to the Oregon Vehicle Code. The most common complaint about daytime running lights is that the beams are not aimed at the road properly, Nelson said. That can be adjusted. It is illegal, however, to drive with illuminated auxiliary lights mounted more than 54 inches high on a vehicle. When high-beams are used, they must be dimmed when approaching an oncoming car within 500 feet or when overtaking or passing a car within 350 feet, according to the vehicle code. Fines for these traffic violations begin at $77, Nelson said.
