Donald Max Long Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 22, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 22, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Donald Max Long passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Springfield, Ore. He was born April 12, 1934 in Hamburg, Iowa to Clifford and Virginia Long. He was the youngest son of three boys and also had a sister, Lois Mary, whom succumbed to scarlet fever early in life. Max lived in Iowa and California before moving to Oregon in 1970, where he spent most of the rest of his life living in the communities of Ashland, Talent, Brookings, and Veneta, Ore. He graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Long Beach, Calif., in 1952, where he once was highlighted in the local newspaper as "setting a torrid pace" in football as a sophomore defensive end weighing in at a whopping 165 pounds. He later earned the nickname, "The Bull." From 1953-1955, Max served in the United States Army and was eventually stationed in Amberg, Germany where he worked security near Czechoslovakia and trained as a Field Radio Mechanic, later becoming a Field Communications Chief. He married Nancy Klotz June 29, 1957. They were married 18 years and had two boys and one girl before an amicable parting of ways. It was also during the early part of this time period that Max was enrolled at Long Beach City College studying microbiology before his second child and financial challenges called him away. In 1961, Max joined the Anaheim Fire Department and worked as a firefighter from then until 1970, when he moved to Ashland, Ore. with his family for a new opportunity in nearby Talent, Ore. as Assistant Chief at Talent Rural Fire Department. Soon after, he was promoted to Fire Chief and served in that position until retiring from the fire department in 1987. In all, he served in the fire services 26 years. For a brief time he also worked as a financial security representative and then served as a corrections officer for six years before finally retiring in 1998. On April 30, 1977, Max married the wonderful Janet Affley. They had two children together; one boy and one girl, Virginia, who passed away at 29 from cancer. They were married for 38 stellar years and made many happy memories together while living mostly in Oregon. He is survived by his wife, four children, and two grandchildren. Max will be remembered as being a wholly authentic and honorable Christian man. He was a loving father, a caring husband, and someone who had the respect of all his peers. He loved the study of history and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Native American history, in particular. He was also an accomplished outboard mechanic. However, above all his hobbies, his greatest enjoyment came from following the Los Angeles-St. Louis Rams NFL franchise. Memorial services will be held March 14, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Veneta, Ore.
