Hospital mistake costs RVMC $100,000 Woman at father's bedside drinks coffee pot cleaner, sues Rogue Valley Medical Center must pay $100,000 to an Eagle Point woman whose throat was burned when she mistakenly swallowed coffee pot cleaner at the hospital, a jury determined Friday. By Anita Burke MailTribune.com By Anita Burke Posted Sep. 10, 2007 @ 2:00 am By Anita Burke Posted Sep. 10, 2007 @ 2:00 am » Social News Rogue Valley Medical Center must pay $100,000 to an Eagle Point woman whose throat was burned when she mistakenly swallowed coffee pot cleaner at the hospital, a jury determined Friday. "I'm ecstatic," Patricia Richardson said after the jury ruled in her favor. "They were held accountable for their actions." Richardson sued the hospital after an incident in February 2004 while she was at the bedside of her father, who was terminally ill with cancer. During his treatment at RVMC he had trouble swallowing, so a thickening agent was added to liquids for him. A certified nurse assistant went to a patient kitchenette, got what she thought was thickener in an unlabeled cup and mixed it with water. Richardson added more of the powder because it didn't thicken, then, at her father's request, tasted the solution. She quickly spit it out, gasping for air as it burned her mouth and throat. Hospital staff realized the powder wasn't thickener and sent her to the emergency room to be examined before she returned to sit with her seriously ill father. Court documents showed that a housekeeper put coffee pot cleaner in a cup in the kitchenette. She intended to label it, but didn't have a marker and forgot to return later. The nurse assistant then used the powder from the unmarked container. Both leaving an unmarked container and using substances not clearly labeled violated hospital procedures. RVMC's Chief Executive Officer Kent Brown said in a prepared statement that Asante, the hospital's parent company, accepted liability for the incident. "Because Asante is a community leader in creating a safe environment for our patients, we have a process in place for thorough investigation of these events with corrective action when indicated," his statement said. "As was explained in the hearing, we did conduct an investigation, identified some needed changes and improvements in processes and implemented them." During the two-day civil trial, the 12-person jury was asked to determine whether Richardson was injured and what compensation she should receive if she had been harmed. Richardson's suit asked for $203,000. Richardson said she wanted to make a reasonable financial request, but more importantly, she wanted to stand up for anyone else who could have been injured or even killed because of a mix-up at the hospital. "Hopefully Rogue Valley Medical Center will pay attention to what's in unmarked containers," she said. Richardson said since the incident she has trouble swallowing and has calcification on her vocal cords that make her voice raspy and leave her hardly able to speak when she wakes up in the morning. She said she plans to use the money awarded her this week for surgery to repair some of the damage so it won't worsen.
