Phoenix knocks off North Valley MERLIN April Darby appears to have made it back. Darby is a three-sport athlete who missed most of her sophomore season at Phoenix High when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a conference-opening volleyball match against Lakeview in 1999. Darby and fellow outside hitter Sutton Jackson were dominant Tuesday as the Pirates defeated North Valley 15-4, 17-15. "It killed her to be out all of last season," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "Shes done a remarkable job working her way back into the starting lineup. Shes had a good season so far, but tonight I thought she had her best all-around volleyball game since tearing her ACL last year." Darby and Jackson each had eight kills. "Jackson and Darby, thats where all our offense came from tonight," said Murphy. "We received a very good floor game from our sophomore setter Kelsey Russell. She did a great job of distributing the ball." After dispatching North Valley quickly in Game 1, Phoenix had a more difficult time in the second game. North Valley took an 8-5 lead, but Phoenix ran off eight straight points to go ahead 13-8. The Knights surged ahead 15-14 and had a chance to extend the match but served out of bounds on game point. North Valley received good passing from Katie Strahan and Nicole Roberts, and freshman Elaina Renius had three blocks. HENLEY 15-15, ROGUE RIVER 2-3 At Klamath Falls, the Hornets used a dominant middle attack and didnt miss a serve in topping the Chieftains. Henleys Alice Myers and Jennifer Claja combined for nine kills and helped the Hornets to eight stuff blocks. Junior outside hitter Sam Young chipped in four kills as Henley (8-0, 3-0 Skyline) boasted a balanced attack. Rogue River managed a 2-0 lead in the first game before Henley got on a roll. ILLINOIS VALLEY 15-12-17, HIDDEN VALLEY 10-15-15 At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley got past Hidden Valley in a tough three-set match. Hidden Valleys Lidia Ulmer played well at the net, but the Mustangs were unable to put constant pressure on Illinios Valleys defense, and lost in an intense third set. ST. MARYS 15-11-15-15, YREKA 7-15-5-7 At Yreka, sophomore Christina Vaninetti had a career night to lead the third-ranked Crusaders to an impressive victory over Yreaka. A very active Vaninetti utilized all of her 6-foot-2 frame to dominate the net with nine kills and four blocks. St. Marys also received great play from two seniors. Kristen Zielony had 14 kills and Lani Brophy added 19 assists. St. Marys (7-2) begins conference play Thursday night against Chiloquin. YONCALLA 11-15-15, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-10-8 At Central Point, seventh-ranked Cascade Christian (6-1) self destructed in the non-league match at Scenic Middle School. The Challengers committed eight service errors, 18 attack errors and 17 serve receive miscues. After winning the opener, Cascade was ahead 9-0 in Game 2, but the Eagles used accurate serving and good ball movement to get back into the match. A bright spot for Cascade was the play of junior Krystle Holtz, who had eight kills and five aces. BUTTE FALLS 16-15 , PROSPECT 14-11 At Prospect, freshman Asia Million led Butte Falls (2-2, 1-0 Skyline A) to a victory over Prospect. Christina Eamons led Prospect (1-1, 0-1 Skyline A) with five kills, while Addie Stockebrand added five assists and four kills.
