For the better part of 10 years, Scottow hopped a Sunday flight en route to Texas and returned Thursday, repeating the routine two out of every three weeks. During 2014 it became apparent to the lean healthcare practice implementation coach that the crowds at the gate were bigger than the past. "There's just not enough seating and space, especially when you have four or five flights departing about the same time," Scottow observed. "It seemed congested at times and I had to make sure I was getting on the right plane." Scottow and other frequent fliers helped push the Medford airport to a record year in 2014. The Jackson County-operated airport saw 664,423 passengers come and go during the year, smashing the 2007 standard of 647,471. A huge December influx of 57,677 passengers capped the record year, outstripping the previous December by 27 percent. The 2014 figure was 5.3 percent higher than the 631,234 total for 2013. "I wish I could tell you something really brilliant as to why," Airport Director Bern Case said. "I'm just thrilled." Scottow, who moved to Texas in August, wound up making the trip in reverse during the fall. His son was a wide receiver on Southern Oregon University's football team, which meant flying to the Rogue Valley six times for home games. "I was just on autopilot at times," he admitted. Competition for seats heightened after the May cessation of commercial flights out of Klamath Falls. After that, passengers flocked to Medford for business purposes and leisure like never before, ending the year with four record months. The September through December count of 231,270 alone surpassed the entire annual totals for 1980-82. Case drew up comparisons to 2007 and 2013, noting there were 46 more passengers each day than in the previous record year and 91 more travelers daily than in 2013. On an around-the-clock basis, there was a passenger arriving or departing every 47 seconds during 2014. Charter flights, including two weekends surrounding SOU's semifinal and championship football trips to Chicago and Daytona Beach, Fla., were contributing factors, he said. There were relatively few weather-related flight cancellations, which was important to Jeff Rodgers, principal broker at John L. Scott Real Estate in Medford,  whose primary destinations are in Texas and Southern California. He said he would rather show up a few minutes earlier and deal with full planes than see under-booked flights cancelled. "I've lived here 40 years and flying out of Medford for a long time," Rodgers said. "It seemed more crowded, but it was working. Lines were a little longer and it might have meant getting there an hour-and-a-half before the flight instead of an hour early. But people were helpful and courteous; it didn't seem to restrict passage." Increasing passenger counts contribute to the airport's financial health, factoring into Federal Aviation Administration grants and passenger facility charges. "The more passengers, the more you get," Case said. "Also, there are more parking, restaurant and gift shop receipts. As an enterprise, when passengers are up, we do better."
