St. Mary's lands three on all-district unit By TIM PYLE of the Mail Tribune District 6 girls soccer all-star voting stayed true to the standings' form. After winning its first District 6 title this fall, the St. Mary's girls soccer team leads the all-district selections with three players on the first team. Goalkeeper Annie Maurer and midfielders Emily Smith and Margo Chamberlain are the Crusaders' representatives on an 11-girl first team. North Valley senior forward Malloree Enoch is the District 6 player of the year, while Cascade Christian's Craig Warren is the top coach. Other players selected to the first team are: Carrie Longan and Victoria Cotta of Cascade Christian; Helen Shorland and Kat Cox of Phoenix; Viola Washburn of North Valley; Becky Schwartz of Henley; and Shae Ford of Hidden Valley. Maurer, Smith and Chamberlain led St. Mary's to a 7-1 mark in district play and 10-2-1 overall record. The Challengers were bounced from the second round of the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs by Pleasant Hill, 3-1, but enjoyed a sterling run beforehand. A senior captain, Maurer helped St. Mary's allow a league-low six goals in District 6 play. "Annie is an unbelievable goalie," Crusaders co-coach Suzanne Irons said. "And she's a wonderful girl. I would love to have her as my daughter." Chamberlain, also a senior, starred at the most opportune times, including a district title-clinching tally in St. Mary's 2-1 overtime victory over Cascade Christian to end the regular season. "Margo made things happen for us," Irons said. "She scored many key goals in overtime or shootouts." Smith, a junior who has transferred to South Medford since the end of the soccer season, was the Crusaders' leading scorer with 13 in league play. "She has got talent galore," Irons said. Enoch paced the district in goal scoring for the third straight season, knocking home 27 this fall to finish her prep career with 91. And North Valley head coach Gary Enoch, Malloree's father, said she was at her best when it mattered most. "She's a finisher," Gary Enoch said. "And intensely competitive. ... The bigger the challenge, the tougher she gets." Malloree Enoch, who finished second in the 100-meter dash at the Class 3A track and field state meet last spring, was the driving force behind the Knights' 10-5-2 season. She scored seven goals in two critical matches against Phoenix - one of which was a league-playoff battle - and four in one meeting with Cascade Christian. "I thought I saw her basically take over a couple of games," said Gary Enoch, whose older daughter, Ashley, was league player of the year in 1998 and now plays at National American University in South Dakota. Warren took his team to within one match of the District 6 title despite the Challengers being in just their second year in the league and third of existence. They finished 9-4-1 overall and made it to the quarterfinals before falling to Blanchet, 4-1, in the state playoffs. Nonetheless, Gary Enoch wasn't surprised. "He's a very capable coach," said Enoch, who knows Warren well because he's coached Malloree Enoch in club soccer. "He definitely knows what it takes to win. He's got a keen sense of tactics."
